At least 14 people have been killed in a suicide bombing on a trolleybus in the Russian city of Volgograd, investigators say. The blast comes a day after 17 people died in another suicide attack at the central station in the city. Security has been tightened at railway stations and airports across Russia. Moscow is concerned militant groups could be ramping up violence in the run-up to the 2014 winter Olympic Games in the city of Sochi.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25546477

How crazy do you have to be to think blowing yourself and a load of others up will make people do anything but hate your cause even more?
Allah'u Akbar!
Incoming hate against Islam, because people actually think this happens for religious reasons and not political.
Incoming hate against Islam, because people actually think this happens for religious reasons and not political.
Islam-ism is literally a result of politics and religion merging. Particular religion, no going around that. And yes it is a thing. Has been for at least 50 years. And the followers are called "Islamic extremists", or "Islamists" to separate them from peaceful Muslim folks who treat Islam properly, as a religion. Just to clear it all up a bit.
Aren't counter-terrorist units supposed to be all surgical strike-y and what not?
Not Russian ones.
Not Russian ones.

Six years later, in October 1985, Alpha Group was dispatched to the war-torn Beirut, Lebanon. The Kremlin was informed of the kidnapping of four Russian diplomats by the militant group Islamic Liberation Organization (a radical offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood). It was believed that this was retaliation to the Russian support of the Syrian involvement in the Lebanese Civil War. However, by the time Alpha arrived, word spread that one of the hostages had already been killed. Through a network of supporting KGB operatives, members of the task-force identified each of the perpetrators involved in the crisis, and once identified, began to take the relatives of these militants as hostages. Following the standard Soviet policy of no negotiations with terrorists, some of the hostages belonging to Alpha Group had been dismembered and their body parts where sent to the militants. The warning was clear: more would follow unless the remaining hostages are released immediately. The show of force worked, and for a period of 20 years no Soviet or Russian officials were taken captive until the 2006 abduction and murder of four Russian embassy staff members in Iraq. However, the veracity of this story is open to debate. Another version says that the release of the Soviet hostages was the result of extensive diplomatic negotiations with spiritual leader of Hezbollah, Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, who appealed to King Hussein of Jordan and the leaderships of Libya and Iran to use their influence on the kidnappers.
Of course, this is more of an anecdote than anything, but the Russians do not fuck around and their attitude towards hostages seems to be cavalier at best.
Release the Putin!
How crazy do you have to be to think blowing yourself and a load of others up will make people do anything but hate your cause even more?
Not crazy. Desperate. Desperate for any kind of furthering for the cause, nothing left to live for. Not to mention, a number of terrorist organizations promise financial aid to the families of those who volunteer to blow themselves up.
