So, last week I had a conversation with a friend of mine about what could have been a really cool video game, I came up with the idea of...
A(n) Free roam/Open World Game, in which you play as a shapeshifter, you have the ability to turn into anything you wish and just explore the whole world (and if you wish destroy s*it), to be more precise I'll list the features of my dream game.
Features:
*Innovative gameplay, play as (Insert name here) a shapeshifter with one purpose in his life, to (Insert purpose here).
*Shapeshift into anything you want ( I thought that you could do that through an in-game window, P.S. You open the windows and type "Cheetah", then a list pops up with all the available Cheetah models and you pick whichever suits you best)
*Stunning Graphics (duh!)
*Tons of in-game models, and downloadable ones.
*Interactive world, fully destructible! And I mean it FULLY destructible.
*Features a variety of different landscapes (desert, ocean, city etc.)
*Features real-world locations!
*And possibly customizable superpowers that can be downloaded (for example, you can download Spider-man and use his powers, without using his form)
Anyway this is a rough idea, and I hope one day I can make it come true, my friend agreed that this is a cool idea, what are your opinions ?
We have an idea man. Now all we need is a wheelman, a demolitions expert, a con artist, a master thief, a crooked book keeper, a computer whiz, a contortionist, and a structural engineer, and we can pull the perfect heist.
[editline]2nd January 2012[/editline]
Are you willing to be played by Clooney? I wouldn't be, personally, but this is really your call. What's your input on that?
would be better if you had made concept images/etc.

Not sure what to answer...

Yeah, I know but this was just a simple conversation, maybe If I have the time I'll post some.
This would be cool, but would take a shitload of time.
This would be cool, but would take a shitload of time.
Yeah, but if it's worth the time and the effort...
ok but how to you plan to make this?
This sounds a little like thenecronlord.
ok but how to you plan to make this?
Gamemaker
also the game sounds very retentive and boring already.
Gamemaker
Not a bad idea however I was hoping to use something more advanced.
ok but how to you plan to make this?
I am not entirely sure, this is just an idea, but as we all know ideas are what created the greatest things on our planet, anyway to answer your question I hope at some point to gather a team and make my dream game come true :D

I'll be honest with you, I posted this thread on FP to find out what people would think of such a game, BUT I have to disagree with you, boring ? The ability to roam the entire planet with any collection of abilities you can dream of boring ? I don't think so.
PS: I am not trying to offend you in any way ;)
then here's something you might want to read before considering getting people in on this projects for free.

I never said for free, nothing good ever get's done for free. (Atleast that's what I've heard)
have you any idea how expensive it is to hire talented people? is the money coming out of your own pocket?
[editline]3rd January 2012[/editline]
read the link I gave you, all three pages
You're being a little too ambitious here, especially since it's all idea and no skills. It's time to accept the game is never going to exist.

Sorry but I think we're getting a little out of topic, I just want to know if people like this idea.
And to answer your question, I happen to know a few talented people and other people who are not so talented but are connected with really talented developers and programmers, I actually don't care if this project will cost me a lot of money 'cause honestly chances are I might never even start it.

Hope I also answered your question.
I don't think you get how much money we are talking about here.
done no need to thank me

A lot of money games like this cost billions I know! Btw I read the link you sent me and I get the point (it's pretty interesting also) all I am just saying is that if and only if I once get a chance to make a decent game this would be it.
Looking forward to the release.
nice idea man i love destroying sh*t
hit me up on icq when you're done f*ck the haters

LOL!
It is a very ambitious idea which is very open-ended and contains everything you want in a game, halabala. Massive, well resourced game studios have not done this yet because it isn't possible. Of course, everyone likes the idea, but a fully destructible environment with detailed destruction animations just isn't doable when you have massive and varied environments like you suggest.
Your idea, basically, has many goals which are mutually exclusive.
you're mutually exclusive, asshole!
Ok look, I can tell you a few things as an indie game dev myself.
First off is the insane amount of programming talent. I don't know if you are going to sell this idea off to a larger company or try and make it yourself, so I can't really say if you are being completely unrealistic or not.
The part about the fully destructible open world is something that even large, multi-million dollar companies cannot even achieve. An open world is extremely difficult to pull off, and having an open world with a cohesive storyline, non-repetitive gameplay or environments, and much less destructible terrain and buildings, is probably not going to happen.
Second is the logistics of such a shapeshifting system. That can be done with today's technology, but depending on how many entities you can take the shape of, the more animations, hitboxes, sounds, models, and textures are required. Furthermore, unless you plan on a cheap dust puff particle effect, each form would have to be animated animating to every other form in the game. There is a reason the main character in a game seldom changes. It's because the most graphical care and detail goes into the main character, its what you look at the most and therefore should be the most visually pleasing. Making hundreds of main characters is not worth the amount of time, money and talent that it requires.
I do know of one way to make a completely destructible environment, with terrain and building deformation. That would be with millions of voxels. In case you don't know, voxels are like pixels, but on a 3D plane instead of 2D. Each mountain in this video is comprised of millions of very small points, instead of being 1 3D model with a collision graph and alpha channel.

Since each point is tracked by the computer, they can be blown up, deformed, or moved without creating a seperate model for each material state.
Unfortunately voxels are difficult to animate with, unable to be textured, and generally don't look as good close up.
This leaves you with very few options for a game of this scope. We all have our dream game (Mine is a voxel-based all-aspect naval combat game), but at some point or another we have to realize how difficult they would be to actually develop.

this game features almost nothing in the op
btw this games sounds pretty gimmicky to me op
[editline]3rd January 2012[/editline]
not that it'll ever exist of course
i like this game, can i be an ideas guy too?
i want one of you graphic modelers or whatever to model a giant pile of s*it for the shapeshifter to transform into.

First of all, thanks for this interesting post you just posted (I really learnt a few things) , secondly I'd like to remind you again that this just my idea of what a perfect game would be, yes I know it is hard to make, yes I know it is probably never going to happen but I really don't care anymore.
sure thing pal
I feel like I just crushed your hopes and dreams... Sorry bro
