Something not mentioned in the article because the writer uses an Nvidia card. AS of February 2013, AMD Drivers will not work with Direct3D mode in this game or others, like Jedi Knight 1. If you want to play with the craft pack he linked you will need to downgrade your drivers.

why are so many games fucked over by this?
You can still play the game, but you will be stuck in 640 resolution and won't be able to use the craft pack without graphical glitches.
Shit like this is why I'd never buy an AMD graphics card
I play too many old games to put up with that bullshit
I elected to skip X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and go straight to the end, 1999′s full 3D X-Wing Alliance.
This seems funny, because XvT and Tie Fighter were better games, imo. They seemed to remove features and and add more story as the series progressed.
And the controls became much simpler. I had to use the keyboard overlay for X-Wing, but by the time Alliance rolled out, I memorized them on sight. I remember it felt cheap and I went back to replaying Tie Fighter.
