The Foo Fighters are an American rock band, formed in Seattle in 1994. It was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the death of Kurt Cobain and the resulting dissolution of his previous band. The group got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as foo fighters. Prior to the release of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album Foo Fighters, which featured Grohl as the only official member, Grohl recruited bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as fellow Nirvana touring bandmate Pat Smear as guitarist to complete the lineup. The band began with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith quit during the recording of the group's second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997) when most of the drum parts were re-recorded by Grohl himself. Smear's departure followed soon afterward. They were replaced by Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl, respectively, although Stahl was fired before the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999). The band briefly continued as a trio until Chris Shiflett joined as the band's lead guitarist after the completion of There Is Nothing Left to Lose. The band released its fourth album, One by One, in 2002. The group followed that release with the two-disc In Your Honor (2005), which was split between acoustic songs and heavier material. Foo Fighters released its sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, in 2007. In 2010, it was confirmed that Smear had officially rejoined the band after touring with Foo Fighters as an unofficial member between 2006 and 2009. Over the course of the band's career, four of its albums have won 11 Grammy Awards winning Best Rock Album four times. The band's seventh studio album, Wasting Light, was released in 2011. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Members Dave Grohl Nate Mendel Taylor Hawkins Chris Shiflett Pat Smear ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albums -- Foo Fighters (1995) -- The Colour and the Shape (1997) -- There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999) -- One by One (2002) -- In Your Honor (2005) -- Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007) -- Wasting Light (2011) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Videos
The Colour and the Shape single-handedly got me "into" music. Such a great album.

First album is the only worthwhile thing they ever did, next to Everlong as a single. They are a good gateway band if you're totally clueless, though.

It was a joke implying that they are amazing live. [editline] 5th February 2013 [/editline] Also, I edited it because I knew someone would think I was talking about the typo, then you came guns blazing with your screenshot and stuff.
Totally Subjective but I feel Wasting Light has been their best work to date. It feels like a really solid album, you know the ones with the roller coaster effect, ups and downs. The album cover was a lot more interesting that usual, felt more visually stimulating to me than the rest of the catalog of covers. The thing I like most about them outside the music is that they are not ego maniacs. Dave Grohl in particular seems like a really down to earth guy. After the tragic end of Nirvana he was just "another drummer", so he's done well, especially in the beginning when Nirvana overshadowed anything he did. Look up all the interviews from the 90's of Foo Fighters and stupid journalists would always hassle Dave about Kurt Cobain's death. Imagine having someone's death you were close to brought up every 5 minutes? Especially a death involving suicide. He's overcome adversity and I just think he's totally humble, he's the only "rock star" worth any idolization from young kids (which people shouldn't do with anyone but they do so it, may as well be a decent human being) because most musicians are self absorbed drug fuck narcissists. It goes with the territory it attracts them, power and fame. In short: Great guy and great band
I saw them back in '07 with NIN supporting, amazing gig.
