I don´t even need my CD drive that much but now that I´d like to re-install my KotOR II, it´s not working. I tried to change my Fallout 3 settings a while ago but it didn´t read the disc. I thought it was the disc, because it´s pretty fucked, but it worked on my other computer so apparently it´s my drive.
It´s a Samsung SH-223F. When I insert a disc, I get the little disc icon next to my mouse for a while, the drive tries to spin a few times and the green light is blinking on the drive but then everything just stops. When I try to run the disc manually it says "E:\ Application not found" and if I try to open the disc, it tells me to insert a disc. It´s like it doesn´t realise there´s a disc in the drive. And yes, I have tried different discs.
Device manager says the drive is working properly. My drivers are from like 2006 but I can´t find any more recent ones. It has worked just fine before so I don´t think drivers are the problem. I´ve also deleted the drive and have windows (I have vista, btw) re-install it but it didn´t help.
So is it faulty hardware? Do I need to get it repaired or get a new drive or what? I just want to play my Sith Lords...:ohdear:
Sounds like it just died, which isn't unlikely for CD drives. A new one usually runs between $20-$30.
Funny story: I once accidently deleted my disc drive.
I managed to get it back by restoring my laptop to its default settings, so that might help.

I said in my post that I deleted the drive to let windows re-install it, to see if it would fix the drive. It didn´t but it surely didn´t break it either, because it re-installed properly and it was broken before it.
If I buy a new drive, is it possible for me to replace it myself? I don´t know batshit about computer parts but I have common sense. Or then I could just have my friend replace it.
