In March, owner Larry Lee’s restaurant made headlines after anti-racism activist Jeannie Harrell used lipstick to scribble on the store's front window a message denouncing the establishment's name. She then bragged about the illegal act on Twitter.
EDIT: apparently she's half white and half Japanese
Good thing that Chinese man had a non-Chinese person there to tell him that what he was doing was offensive to himself. That could've been bad news.
Watch these pricks celebrate this as a victory against "internalized racism" or some absurd shit. God I hate people sometimes.
it's the funniest shit ever that some people are so against racism that it turns completely against them and they do racist things Just comes to show you, it absolutely doesn't matter at all what you are, if you're a radical, you're the reason
It's behind a register wall. Any other sources?
Strange. I'll quote the entire article.
Jeannie Harrell was arrested in February after she scrawled a lipstick message at the Lakeview restaurant Chop Chop Chinaman. She found the restaurant's name objectionable. (Armando L. Sanchez, Chicago Tribune) Jeannie Harrell, the woman who scrawled lipstick on a Lakeview restaurant window because she found its name objectionable, pleaded guilty Tuesday on charges of misdemeanor criminal damage to property. Harrell, 26, was sentenced to one month supervision, meaning if she doesn't get arrested in the next month, the charge may eventually be expunged from her record, and fined $200. "The primary feeling is relief," Harrell said after her court appearance Tuesday. She said of the February incident: "I don't know if I would do anything different, though. It's not something I feel ashamed about." She was arrested in February for defacing the window decal at the Lakeview Chinese restaurant Chop Chop Chinaman. Harrell, who is half Japanese, said she found the term "Chinaman" racist and antiquated. The restaurant's co-owner Larry Lee, who himself is three-quarters Chinese, defended the term as a catchy name. Lee had been seeking $479 restitution for damage to his window. In another twist to the saga: Chop Chop Chinaman has been closed the last several weeks because Lee said the restaurant ran out of operating capital. He is in the process of seeking an investor and hoping to reopen. kpang@tribpub.com Twitter @pang
So "Chop chop" is racist right? I mean it sounds kinda like saying "Ching Chong" which is about as offensive as you can get with that.
According to Harrell, the Chicago restaurant's name was a “hate crime” as the word "Chinaman" is a racist slur.
I can't even express how confused I am by this
just hit "not right now" then the back button, it won't pop up again
It did for me
I can't even express how confused I am by this
as far as I know, its not at the same level as "chink", but its has a historically racist connotation in the US, like "negro" does
So "Chop chop" is racist right? I mean it sounds kinda like saying "Ching Chong" which is about as offensive as you can get with that. I can't even express how confused I am by this
Don't even try to justify it, people are just retarded.
So "Chop chop" is racist right? I mean it sounds kinda like saying "Ching Chong" which is about as offensive as you can get with that. I can't even express how confused I am by this
Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.
Having been to China twice and having some friends from there, they would have just laughed at the name. Chinese people can take casual racism more then I ever seen. Hell in my Mandarin class, we had one kid who would say things like "ching chong ping pong" when he didn't know something and the teacher thought it was hilarious.
Strange. I'll quote the entire article.
Her fine should be the cost of Lee to reopen the store after she caused it's business to tank.
Strange. I'll quote the entire article.
Jesus Christ, is that dyed hair I see? Is it official? Is dyed hair the womens fedora/neckbeard?
Jesus Christ, is that dyed hair I see? Is it official? Is dyed hair the womens fedora/neckbeard?
I'm starting to see a pattern and I don't like it.
Jesus Christ, is that dyed hair I see? Is it official? Is dyed hair the womens fedora/neckbeard?
I've never met a sane person with dyed hair that wasn't doing it as a joke.
It's getting to the point that these people bother me just as much as actual racists.
So "Chop chop" is racist right? I mean it sounds kinda like saying "Ching Chong" which is about as offensive as you can get with that. I can't even express how confused I am by this
Don't be confused, be indifferent. If you aren't trying to be offensive, then there's no problem. That's how simple this bullshit should be; it isn't though and only became a problem in this case because there's plenty of overly-sensitive people out there in society today who live to find a reason come hell or high water to get offended over something (anything) in order to feel special and to feel like they're doing something that matters with their lives. Or because they're just genuinely silly and think that they've found a serious problem that needs to be fixed, for the good of mankind (which I'm not inclined to believe is true in this woman's case). Half-white and half-Japanese, hideously dyed hair, self-proclaimed "anti-racism activist" who went after a Chinese restaurant with a funny name in a bizarre fashion involving lipstick. You madam are a stupid, annoying bitch, and people like you are terrible for the rest of us to try and live around. Stop ruining things and stop creating problems where there aren't any in the first place. Please. Thank you.
as far as I know, its not at the same level as "chink", but its has a historically racist connotation in the US, like "negro" does
incidentally, chinaman is also a cricketing term used to refer to slow left arm unorthodox spin bowling.
I don't get why so many white people still feel the need to defend asians from supposedly 'racism' Like when everyone goes nuts when Jeremy Clarkson mentioned the word 'slope', Asian people could barely give a shit.
I don't get why so many white people still feel the need to defend asians from supposedly 'racism' Like when everyone goes nuts when Jeremy Clarkson mentioned the word 'slope', Asian people could barely give a shit.
It was that half-Japanese part of her trying to stick it to the (China)man.
I don't get why so many white people still feel the need to defend asians from supposedly 'racism' Like when everyone goes nuts when Jeremy Clarkson mentioned the word 'slope', Asian people could barely give a shit.
Those people dont really understand that other races are regular human beings who can decide for themselves. They see them as some endangered species white people need to protect. We are your protectors, its our burden, but dont worry, whitey is looking out for ya.
If you wanna fight racism against Asians, you've got a buffet of things you could target, things that are actually done by non-Asians.
I don't get why so many white people still feel the need to defend asians from supposedly 'racism' Like when everyone goes nuts when Jeremy Clarkson mentioned the word 'slope', Asian people could barely give a shit.
Self-centered egotistical cunts who realize their savior fantasies by enabling their latent racism in the act of talking in the place of people who are perfectly able to talk for themselves because they somehow think these minorities aren't physically or mentally able to perceive issues and speak up about them.
I think this woman is just a racist who hates Chinese people to be honest. It makes 90% more sense if you look at it that way. I'd classify this as a hate crime.
I don't get why so many white people still feel the need to defend asians from supposedly 'racism' Like when everyone goes nuts when Jeremy Clarkson mentioned the word 'slope', Asian people could barely give a shit.
People are idiots, that's why.
Jesus Christ, is that dyed hair I see? Is it official? Is dyed hair the womens fedora/neckbeard?
I think only if it's an unnatural color.
