I can't think of anything to shamelessly buff out the post a little more, so enough of the blatant stammering and here are my current specs:
Cpu: AMD phenom II X4 955 (3.01GHZ factory standard)
Gpu: Sapphire VaporX Radeon 5770 HD
Psu: A fairly generic 500W unit.
Os: windows xp 32bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte M52L-S3P
Current ram: Kingston 2GB DDR2 667.
I was thinking of buying an extra stick or two of this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-667MHz-DDR2-Non-ECC/dp/B0009JR82U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1277914337&sr=8-2
It's cheap and standard, and i feel it would be alright (I intend on getting enough ram to run windows 7 for games comfortably)
Now, as you can see from my minimized specs, my pc is not unlike a WoW "clown suit" with various parts bunged together with little consideration of harmony.
So my question is this: Is it worth me buying that standard ddr2, or should i wait and get 2GB of ddr3? Also (Just to make sure) Is it at all possible for ddr2 and ddr3 to get along in tandem?
Also, being the wizards that you guys are, could you in some way suggest how i could go about making all of the parts i have run together a little better? All of the parts are "as is" with no overclocking or special drivers and whatnot.
I currently don't have that much cash (right now i have 25 quid, but hey, that's what saving's for eh?)
Thanks in advance!
(Also, i find it maddeningly confusing about how well certain cpus go with certain clock speeds and something about an equation about cpu speed against ram speed and all the rest of it, i don't suppose you guys could make sense of it for my particular pc? thanks again)
Why 64 bit?
Sorry for sparking that age old question, but i was just wondering if i should get ddr2 or ddr3.
Is 64 bit a little more efficient ram wise?

Yes it is more efficient, in that without it your 32 bit operating system will only recognize ~3.2 GB of it.
Always get x64, there used to be issues with the memory addressing in programs, but thats uncommon now.
Alrighty thanks for the heads up.
Windows 7 use multi-core processors better. At the same time it supports up to 128GB RAM, whereas 32-bit only goes up to 4GB. You cannot use DDR3 on your current mobo.
cool, thanks for the advice.
I'll buy the ram asap and reformat to win7 64 then.
Hopefully then i'll be able to play just cause 2 and actually use my cards DX11!
Yeah, DX11 isn't implemented in XP.

If you have a DDR2 motherboard then you can't put DDR3 RAM in it, it won't work. But don't worry there's basically no performance difference between the two, so you won't be missing out
If you want your parts to run better
Get an after market cooler and overclock the 955
Get MSI afterburner and overclock the 5770

Yeah, the only reason DDR3 is popular right now is because it costs about the same as DDR2. And because new motherboards use it.

I remember when I bought 2GBs of DDR2 for $20.... Now I gotta pay almost $80 to upgrade to 4GBs.
My 4GB's of ram cost more than my CPU. That's how expensive it has gotten.
Haha that's true! My CPU cost about £90 which is the same price as 4GB of decent RAM

what, which cpu do you have
I'm guessing it's probably an athlon x3/4

AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition
Can't you unlock that?
