Definition!
Body modification (or body alteration) is the deliberate altering of the human body for aesthetic or non-medical purpose, such as sexual enhancement, a rite of passage, denoting affiliation, trust and loyalty, religious reasons, shock value, and self-expression. It can range from the socially acceptable decoration to the religiously mandated, and everywhere in between. Body art is the modification of any part of the human body for spiritual, religious, artistic or aesthetic reasons.
Common Terms! - APP - Association of Professional Piercers - barbell (BB) - a straight metal bar with a ball on both ends. - blowout - a risk of stretching too fast, when the flesh tube is forced out the front or back of the piercing. - circular barbell - horseshoe shaped barbell - crusties - lymph discharge that usually appears as clear yellow crust on the jewelry and outside edges of the - piercing a few days after piercing, indicating proper healing. A piercing is healed after "crusties" disappear for - 2 weeks straight without returning. - gauge - the thickness of a piece of jewelry, abbreviated 'g' or 'ga'. Smaller gauges are thicker than larger gauges. For example, a 0g plug is larger than a 6g plug. - keloid - a raised, fibrous scar tissue, normally dark red to purple in color that forums at the site of surgery or trauma to the skin (such as piercing). people of African and Asian decent are more prone to keloids. keloids can only be removed surgically. - migration - movement of the jewelry/piercing within the body, moving the jewelry to a different place or possibly migrating completely out of your body. Signs of migration are redness, a line-scar where the jewelry has traveled, more of the jewelry showing than used to (different than swelling reduction), or a thinning of the skin holding the jewelry. - needle - the only thing that is appropriate to use to pierce with. needles must be sterilized, opened in front of the customer, then disposed of in a sharps container immediately after use - taper - a cone shaped, needle-like object used to stretch piercings while gauging or stretching. - Tattoo machine - A machine used to tattoo someone, utilizes a needle moving up and down quickly to push ink into the skin. The ink is underneath the epidermis and the outer layer of dermis. There's no way that Vaseline can get down through the epidermis to draw out any of the ink. * Swimming fades a tattoo. For the same reason above, chlorine does not get to the ink . Common sense precautions include not swimming in a public pool with a wound. Sunlight, however, does have a fading affect on tattoos and may be a reason people assume swimming causes the fading. It is advisable to always wear sunblock to protect your tattoos (and your skin). * An IV cannot be given in an area with a tattoo. Giving an IV through a tattoo will make the ink from the tattoo go into the bloodstream and cause blood poisoning. There is absolutely no reason why an IV or any other medical injection cannot be given in an area that contains a tattoo. It is not necessary to "see" the vein in order to insert an IV needle or give an injection and any skilled medical professional should be able to do so by feeling the area. Likewise, the ink from the tattoo will not enter the blood stream and cause blood poisoning. * If you have a tattoo across your lower back, you cannot get an epidural. As in the case of the above myth, there is absolutely no reason why an epidural cannot be given in an area that is tattooed. * Tattooing blocks the pores and makes it impossible for a person's body to sweat. Again, this is false. Tattooing does not block the pores and your body will still be able to sweat/breathe with a tattoo. * Tattoo ink will seep into your bones. Tattoo ink will not seep into your bones. * Having a tattoo means you're a member of a gang. While many gang members have tattoos, so do many doctors, lawyers and individuals from all walks of life. Simply being tattooed is not an affiliation with a gang or club of any kind. This rumour will likely fade into complete obscurity as the popularity of tattooing continues to rise. * You can't be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you have tattoos. This is absolutely false yet remains a heavily perpetuated myth. Having a tattoo will not keep you from being buried in a Jewish cemetery (if you are a Jew).
- Piercing misconceptions
* Getting a certain body part pierced is an indicator of one's sexuality. This rumor is an old one but one that is still being perpetuated today. Today, getting one ear pierced doesn't mean you're gay any more than it means you're straight. * Piercings will affect an X-ray It is a common misconception by people in the medical community that body piercings will adversely affect the developing of an X-ray film. Jewelry will be visible on an X-ray film in the same way that a medical pin or metal plate is visible (generally showing up as bright white amongst the grayscale of the rest of the film). It will have no adverse effects on the patient, technician, or film. That said, jewelry can obscure bone and tissues beneath it, thereby increasing the risk that an injury will go unnoticed if it is directly beneath the shadow of the jewelry. * If you get an MRI and don't take out your piercings, the magnet from the machine will rip them out. Quality body jewelry is made from non-magnetic materials, the most common being surgical grade stainless steel, titanium and niobium. While the risk of having the piercings rip out of the body during an MRI made not be sound, it is possible that, like with an x-ray, a piercing could potentially block the view of an injury or issue directly beneath it. * Tragus Piercings cause facial paralysis. There is no truth to the rumor that piercing one's tragus, that small bump in front of the ear canal, will lead to facial paralysis. This myth varies and versions about piercing one's lip, tongue and other body parts and "hitting a nerve that causes paralysis" exist. Fortunately, our body's are constructed better than that. * Nipple Piercings cause cancer. There is no correlation between developing cancer and having one's nipple pierced. * Having your nipples pierced means you will be unable to breastfeed. There is no evidence to suggest that a woman's pierced nipples will have any effect on her ability to breastfeed.
Risks! "Son, you're shovin' shit into your skin. Of course there's a risk." -Infection Even though there are MASSIVE steps taken towards ensuring safe and sterile piercing and tattooing, infection is a big risk. More often than not, these come from lack of aftercare. Piercings and tattoos are wounds. Beautiful (usually) wounds, but wounds nonetheless, and should be treated as such. Infections can be EASILY avoided by using a saline rinse to clean a piercing a few times a day. Some studios suggest using witch hazel, though it burns a bit. -Rejection This is pretty nasty stuff. This happens when it's easier for your body to shove out a piercing, rather than heal around it. They're rare when proper care is taken, though could still happen. The main factor in rejection is abuse. If you keep fucking with your piercing, it increases the chances of rejection. Usually, the only piercings that have a chance to be rejected are surface piercings. -Regret Mostly stupid people suffer from this. Tattoos and piercings should NOT be done on a whim. You're applying a permanent paint to one of the most precious canvases available. Sure, you can get a tattoo removed, but be prepared to spend a ton of money. I got it about a year ago, and I've been drawing near endlessly on additions since then. Yes, I do know it can be spelled different ways. Yes, I do know that some Neo-Nazis identify with the Valknut. Fuck'em. Post your own body modifications and ask tons of questions!
So can I discuss what is involved in becoming a fully functional cyborg in this thread, or is that off topic?
Cyborgs are awesome, therefore on topic.
So, on the topic of tattoos. I have two questions. Will tattoos cover scars that I have? And will an injury damage a tattoo? like, will a scar deform the colours, or whatever. [editline]11th March 2011[/editline] Also, I used to have a lip piercing. It apparently suited me, but I made a deal with my dad that I'll get rid of it if I can drop mathematics as a subject :3: [editline]11th March 2011[/editline] And lastly, I wanted to do a Tattoo artist apprenticeship while studying Law, but I don't have time :saddowns:
I only wear these contacts that have two irises. The one next to the pupil is gray, the next one is red and the white part is gray as well. I'm really not into piercings as they can be really painful. Tattoos are a bit too permanent for my taste, but i am looking into getting my teeth sharpened if possible.

The main one being a scar has to be a year or two old before any artist will touch it. As for injury, it depends. Major injury that would remove a deep layer of skin will, of course, remove the ink. Things like scratches and scabs may fade the tattoo a bit. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline]
I only wear these contacts that have two irises. As for tattoos, the more you think about a tattoo, the less likely you are to regret it. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline] And teeth filing can be as permanent as a tattoo, and FAR more likely to cost you a job.

I mean, is the norse paganism something you grew up with/feel attached to or did you just get it for the looks?
I only have my nose pierced, I used to have my eyebrow but took it out two years ago. I'm gonna get a tattoo of my dog's paw on my leg.
I love all my piercings! I got my nose done when I was about 14 - I guilted my mum into it claiming my face needed more sparkle as I'd just had my braces removed and it looked dull ;) Got my lip done last year and still forget I have it... Then I got my tragus done, that's probably my favourite then I got my tongue done about 6 months ago then my front helix a few months ago - but it got really infected and dodgy cos I had a new piercer and she did it fucking wrong ¬_¬ so it never healed and went bad got it taken out cos it was gross and I didn't sleep on my right side for like 3 months :v: designed my tattoo but just saving up for it now and making sure I don't change my mind
I hear it's incredibly rare but "cold branding" (iron supercooled, usually with liquid nitrogen) is something I'd like to look into getting done. The rarity of it is part of the appeal and it's neat that if done correctly the hair in the area will grow back white. I'm not sure of what I'd get done at the moment though.
I'd like to get an eyebrow piercing, but I'm not exactly sure why I want to, or if I should. I hate my brain.

yeah but she was shit, and not an apprentice
People think having many piercings on their face is somewhat attractive and would be socially accepted? God damn ugly motherfuckers.
yeah but she was shit, and not an apprentice
Oh, well, fuck her. Also, there's a special balance with piercings, and body modification in general. It's like there's a certain point where you can be incredibly attractive with them, but beyond that it's too much. Perfect examples of a good balance :fappery: This, however, is disgusting. I wouldn't like to modify myself as much as they do, but I can't deny that I find some of these mods amazing, and please don't think that they are all permanent, for example the girl with the needles through her back, these are just "playpiercings", motives behind those vary. I've just got a nostril and middle labret piercing, thought about a medusa as well, but I'm not quite sure, plus I have to wait until I find a job too (still go to school). In addition I have seven normal lobe piercings plus two stretched, 16mm and 18mm, plan to get both to 20mm. At the moment I've got four tattoos, a Fleur-de-Lis above each ankle (outside), and a star above each ankle on the inside. Plan to get at least two more, not sure where.

The medusa is about as bad as the labret. Easy to take care of, on top of that. Truthfully, if I worked in the industry, I'd probably go all out on my body mods. Seeing as I'm planning on being a college English teacher, however, I doubt that'll happen. On the playpiercings, I've actually seen a guy do a stage show with them. It was a mix of playpiercings and suspension, actually. It was awesome.
I have to say, I'm really not a fan of this stuff. However, I will admit it's extremely interesting watching interviews and how it's done.

My uncle used to have a tongue piercing (inb4 super technical term abuse), and he sounded hilarious with it in. Even after swelling went down he sounded like he had Down syndrome. I don't think I'd ever get a piercing, perhaps a tattoo but I'd have to be much more in shape than I am now.
Labret and two earrings on my left ear, here. Got them about two or three months ago. Not sure if I'll do anything else.
Another enthusiast! The medusa is about as bad as the labret. Easy to take care of, on top of that.
:buddy: I'm interested in this for about five years now, used to read a lot in another forum where some had pretty extreme mods. One had a stretched labret, nostrils, medusa, lobes and whatnot, but all looking well made, healthy and most important clean. I find dirty (stretched) piercings gross as hell, no wonder why a lot of people have bad opinions about modded people, when there are so many with mods that don't know anything about it and in general behave very stupid and uncivilized. For the medusa, I'm not worried about the pain or aftercare, more about if it would actual fit to me. Sometimes I think I'm done with piercings, and other times I think about getting maybe even two more labrets and so on. So I guess I'll just wait a bit longer, but thanks anyway :3:
I told myself that I'd only get my eyebrow done, then I got the labret, and then then medusa. I'm getting my left nostril and my bridge soon, plus (re)piercing and gauging up my ears. I keep telling myself that's all I'm going to get, but I know I'll end up getting more. Hell, I still have two half sleeves that need to be done. Also, body mods run in my family, so I've always been interested in them. My mom's got a good bit of tattoos and a few piercings, as does my dad. My sister's got about 70% of her body covered in amazing tattoos, a good bit of piercings, and she models for parlors and what not. Oh, if you haven't already, check out bodymod.org, they've got some good stuff.
