Hold up, 25 people equals 10 percent? Holy shit, that means there should be only 225 people in the company. Ain't that a little small for a major game developer?
are steam staff separate from valve staff? you would think they would have a lot of support agents but maybe not with how long it takes to recieve a reply to a ticket

They've always been teeny tiny; I remember back when they were 160. I don't really want them to get large though; they're one of the last few big indie companies left

I reckon there's maybe 50-75 working altogether on Support at best. Valve receives thousands and thousands of tickets every day, no wonder it can take forever.
Maybe it has to do with a lack of game projects? I mean all they're really doing right now is finishing up Dota 2 / TF2 Updates every so often, that doesn't take much.
I'm sure it was for good reasons. Whenever Valve doesn't talk about something it sparks curiosity. Especially when they have a reputation for being awesome about this kind of thing.
It's the lack of thanking people for their time and work that confuses me. There more to this?
It's the lack of thanking people for their time and work that confuses me. There more to this?
Why would you do that in an informal press release focussing on the release of information?
If you see Gabe in interviews you'll see that he's not one of those repeat-thankers. He's humble, modest, and he'll say 'thanks' once and leave it at that. Anything he had to say to these ex-employees, he would have said to them in person.
It seems like some have been let go to do projects being finished, like Matthew Russell- animating the Meet The videos. There's no real use having a trailer animator around if you have no upcoming projects for that perhaps?
While at the same time some seemed flat out laid off or fired like those in the hardware section.
Man all these recent news are so not Valve-like.

I wouldn't call them 'indie', just independant. There's something about the word 'indie' that irks me.

Indie is essentially just an abbreviation of independent, and I don't really see any difference in meaning

There were only about 70 people who worked on the original Assassin's Creed game.

1 person can ship a game, if they work hard enough on it.

Valve isn't an indie company! One of their finest products, Steam, has an estimated share of 50-70% of the digital distribution market for video games. Half-Life 2 won VGA 2012: Game of the Decade Award. Also, they have produced some of the best and most recognizable video games ever made!
Doesn't anyone else find it very worrying Valve laid off some employees?

They're not publicly held company; they're independent

Ok, I didn't know!
Also, there games aren't really Indie though, they're Triple A (AAA) games.
Valve are not indie, because they are a publisher themselves. It's like saying Ubisoft is indie

What soooo winning prestigious awards and being a dominant force in online game distribution somehow makes them not independent?
Indie/independent just means they do everything themselves, that's like, the whole definition
Valve are not indie, because they are a publisher themselves. It's like saying Ubisoft is indie
They're independent because they're not on the stock market. They have no investors; they are financially self-sufficient. This means that they don't answer to any investors/publishers/shareholders, and this affords them the huge freedoms they have to experiment and innovate. Therefore, indie.

We're already past this!
And their games count as indie because they're from an indie company, AAA just means a high quality big budget project

Actually, that's a lot.

Naughty Dog also has a employeesize of that.
Actually, that's a lot.
Yeah, but we're talking about Valve, they got two of the biggest PC multiplayer games under the belt, thought they had 500 people or something.
There certainly haven’t been any public statements expressing regret at losing any staff, nor thanking anyone for their work for the company until this point.
Really RPS..
