I honestly don't miss having to hunt down for that one save point in Vice City because I didn't waste money on some fake house near the mall. Oh and losing my only save because I turned my console off as it was saving.
Honestly manual save games in GTA V are so handy, being able to just go to a spot, save and pick up from where I left off with a car I stole is way better. Also I just like to save my game, fuck around with something I would never bother with, like a gun or a stupid tactic which is maybe wastefull but fun at the moment, load the save and keep playing as usual with a more optimal strategy.
Static save game locations no longer allow you to feel safe or experiment with the game and its mechanics, I would rather have the game feel easy instead of being annoyed that I can't even try doing that one thing, or otherwise the game will fuck me over by who knows, locking me out of some area or by making the game nearly impossible because I fucked myself over by wasting some gun or powerup too soon.
traditional save points are a waste of my time regardless of how it affects the difficulty/atmosphere/design vision

More or less, I was just trying to get a point across though.
Static save points are an outdated concept, if you hate manual savegames then just don't use them, however there are most likely some design issues if it feels like the game railroads you into using them just to have a good time (even if you dislike them), maybe the RNG is fucking you over too much (Fallout 1, Fallout 2, XCOM) or you do really well and then suddenly the game pulls a sudden bullshit move which you either couldn't had seen coming, or maybe the game decided that the next enemy should have a million HP because fuck you.
Also I'm so glad Rockstar finally added mission checkpoints, I hated having to go through that one bullshit mission 20 times just to fail it on the first two minutes or right at the end because of shitty luck or because of a game ending bug.
Manual save games are also great for those cases where the game just crashes no matter what, at least if you are lucky you only have to waste 10 or 30 minutes to get back to where you left off if you manually saved earlier, it also gives you more variation and freedom seeing as you can save where you want, not where the game imposes you to.
