No injuries were immediately reported. Amateur video of the twister showed a funnel churning through the city, occasionally illuminated by exploding electrical transformers. The Mobile Fire Department said it had received reports of downed limbs, power lines, gas leaks and damage at Murphy High School inside the city. The department tweeted that it had not been "overwhelmed" by calls. "We still have plenty of resources and are handling each call as it comes in," the department said. Crews were going door to door to check on residents. Alabama Power reported that 31,000 customers had lost power, including nearly 26,000 in Mobile. Residents reported some home damage and downed trees. The tornado appeared as a line of storms rolled through the Gulf Coast region on Tuesday, with a somewhat rare system also bringing snow to the lower Plains.
-Nah, I just got banned for insensitivity-
The same storm that gave us in Texas a white Christmas are giving those in Alabama a terrifying one. :(
Stay safe, as a Kansan I'm all too familiar with what a tornado is capable of.
Good luck Mobile, Madison/Harvest was destroyed and we lost power for 3 weeks last April.
Gotta love the south.
Way too soon. [editline]25th December 2012[/editline] Multiple trees and power lines are down. [editline]25th December 2012[/editline] Injuries have been reported according to Reed Timmer
i love tornado-type weather. it's exciting.
I live in Birmingham so I've been watching the weather as much as possible. I was watching a stream of it on my phone and they put up a camera showing downtown Mobile. It went literally down the middle of downtown Mobile and must have hit a transformer station because there was a massive discharge or explosion of some kind in the middle of the city. [editline]25th December 2012[/editline]
i love tornado-type weather. it's exciting.
Not when you've had a fatal one pass three blocks away from your house and destroy homes two blocks away completely.

Reminds me of the May 1999 tornado.
Oh Jesus, if I saw that out my window I'd shit my pants immediately. And on Christmas, too... I feel sorry for everyone living there :C
there's also/was a tornado here in louisiana sucks shit son we were going to christmas carol :(
i love tornado-type weather. it's exciting.
It's not when you're huddled in the corner of your basement as your house shakes and your mom cries for fear of losing everything. Tornadoes are not something to be loved or anything to be excited about. If you're saying that you've probably never been very close to one.
I wish you guys the best =/

Hope the people in Mobile come out ok.
That's a scary picture. Hope the people in Mobile come out ok.
That isn't as scary as the ones we saw on the stream from ABC3340, they were brighter and clearer and further back, showing this thing much better.
FOX just replayed footage of the tornado on their stream.
I've never been in a tornado, but I've come pretty close. Good luck to anyone in Mobile right now.
I live on the Panhandle just to the east of Mobile, about 40 miles. Haven't seen any Tornadoes but I think that's because I live next to the ocean and the wind sheer coming off of it has something to do with it. See quite a few water spouts though

But off the coast of the FL panhandle, there isn't as much shear as there is on ground a bit further north:
I went to Mobile when I saw the USS Alabama on my way home from my vacation in Florida. It was a nice town, best wishes from Texas!

FOX is aired pictures of the damage.
Man, that must suck. And on Christmas too. If any of you are caught in this, I wish you the best.
No damage reports in the Mobile area on the SPC site yet.
Real question. I've always been curious: why live in an area which is prone to devastating tornadoes? I wish everyone safety, but it strikes me as odd that someone would live in an area known for crazy ass storms.
About 70K people are without power.

Why live in one with dangerous animals? Avalanches? Droughts? Earthquakes? Volcanoes? etc. The simple fact is that no place is without its dangers, and we all have to find somewhere to live. I wish the world would be a safer place, but it simply is what it is.

Welp, guess I'm gonna hide in my bunker for a few hours
