An entire class of graduating seniors in a Chicago suburb was denied diplomas after the students ignored warnings not to throw their graduation caps into the air during Tuesday's commencement ceremony.
"It was the perfect ending to the graduation, but unfortunately we didn't get our diplomas," graduating senior Andre Taraska said.
The Ridgewood High School students in northwest suburban Norridge will not be given their diplomas unless they publicly apologize, officials said. School administrators, who say the students were warned repeatedly beforehand, called their actions disrespectful.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Lupo explained the reasoning behind the decision on his blog.
Here's the idiot's (Lupo's) blog: http://rhsrebels.blogspot.com/
Home of the Rebels.
We'd just as soon not have graduates leaving with cuts and black eyes
What, were their caps made out of razor blades and sledgehammers?
To be fair, they were warned. But jesus how up-tight can an administration be.
eat shit superintendent dr robert lupo, and fuck your blog
Superintendent Dr. Robert Lupo explained the reasoning behind the decision on his blog.
"The gym is decorated; people dress up (some of them); we expect dignified behavior," Lupo wrote. "Secondly, it is an indoor event. In past ceremonies, people have been hit by flying caps. We'd just as soon not have graduates leaving with cuts and black eyes."
So the natural thing to do then, of course, is deny everyone their diplomas...?
Stop being so fucking retarded, you absurd assclown.

Why? Why is this something to fucking deny them their diplomas over? 'Disrespectful'? Disrespectful my ass.
This guy is just having a fucking power trip.
Oh, this was also in the source

They were warned, sure. Punishing those that threw their caps (when warned)? Questionable, but not unfair (because there was warning). Punishing those that were innocent of all "crimes" committed (AKA those that didn't throw their caps) for the actions of those that went against the warning? Total. Fucking. Bullshit.
Someone that didn't throw their cap should file suit.
Imagine spending four long, dreadful years in school, dealing with schoolwork, projects, and all sorts of general high school stuff all for that ceremony, and some fuckwit in power says you can't have your diploma because your friends were throwing their caps up in the air.
At least someone had to break the rules to get everyone's diploma withheld. This year's diplomas(including mine) were withheld for 10 days because some fucknugget flipped everyone off at the ceremony 3 years prior. Our district adopted a policy of making us wait 10 days to get our diplomas instead of actually getting them during the ceremony because of that one dipshit.
Also, we threw our caps. In fact, we had express permission so long as we made sure they went straight up and not in a trajectory off in some other direction.
Cap throwing was one of the funnest things about graduation. It's not disrespectful, and it's not uncivilized. It's a symbol of graduation, and has been for decade. You throw your cap up in excitement of being done with a phase of life and starting your bigger phase of life, be it college or some form of job. Caps are light weight as shit and wouldn't hurt anyone even if you got hit with the edge of one. It really does just strike me as a power trip when you try to keep students from doing something viewed as normal for their whole lives. Glad he reversed his dumbass decision, lets hope he doesn't try and pull any sort of stunt like this with future students. He's welcome to make the rule, and warn students, but he'll likely face this sort of response every single year.
i would go to that meeting...then as a concerned citizen (now that i would be out of highschool) kindly tell him to go fuck himself
To all of the graduates who did not participate in the banned activity: I am sorry that your fellow classmates put you in this position. If you wish to voice your concerns, you should probably start with them.
I hate reasoning like this. "I'm not the one who denied you your diplomas it's your friends". Bullshit. The decision was ultimately up to you, Lupo, not those who threw their caps.
Somebody is going to get their ass sued off by a bunch of angry parents and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the superintendent is forced to resign over this.
And not to mention there are some places that require you to have a diploma to get a job there.
At my grad we didn't have caps.
when i graduated people threw their caps and nobody gave a shit. But everyone had written their names on the inside so the guy with the mic was listing people who threw their caps and having them walk back up the bleachers and shamefully retrieve them. :v:

"to be fair" doesn't even apply to be fair

Not unfair? far from it imho
Yeah we should never throw caps. You could poke an eye out.
While we're at it, we might as well punish writing with pencils for more than a minute to keep them from cramping their delicate hands.
Also, ban talking so students will never argue our disagree.
And make a rule that says students are banned from school in total. Wouldn't want students getting hurt on campus, would we?
(No seriously this is the logic they use)
This cannot be legally done, in the United States a public school receiving federal/state funds along with grants cannot go against what is state mandated.
Once you've taken the state mandated tests and passed them, and have completed 4 years of high school, you're no longer required to attend high school, and have legally graduated.
"We're sorry that our school administrators are such uptight fun nazi's"
Well, they said they had to publically apologise, they didn't say for what exactly.

Doesn't even matter anyway, no university is going to deny you entrance over something this petty. Especially since they would've all been accepted by this point, had they already applied.
I especially like how they're denying everyone diplomas to try and shift blame onto the seniors, instead of the idiot staff.

Seriously, what the fuck.
It's only natural for the superintendent to ban throwing caps. People have died from thrown caps. He would know, he's killed someone with a cap before.
Picture related, it's a portrait of the superintendent:

Once it went viral, he fucking backpedaled fast. What a dimwit.
There should be a law preventing this stuff from happen. Denying people to graduate as a disciplinary action is like really evil cause that made their last 4 years just be a waste.
If I was there I would have gone completly fucking postal, good thing they reversed the decision.
It's a crying shame that they were denied them at the ceremony, but great they did receive them.
It's just a tradition that students have done for decades, hell my school COMPLETELY encouraged us to do this, they told us well in advance to write out names in the inside of the hat or to decorate it so we can distinguish it among the many other caps after we throw ours up in the air.
What, did they have German WWI helmets?
At my graduation they told us the same thing, really fucking retarded to deny a you whole highschool career over throwing your cap and just shows how fucking retarded public schools have gotten in the past 10 years or so.
At my graduation they "forbade" us from throwing our caps.
We still threw our damn caps up. >_> After 4 years of torture and state mandated testing, I'd think we were entitled to at least ONE moment of glee.
I hope those parents raise hell over this if it hasn't been resolved already.
