The general synod of the Church of England has voted against the appointment of women as bishops. The decision came at the end of a day of debate by supporters and opponents - and a 12-year legislative process. The measure was passed by the synod's houses of bishops and clergy but was rejected by the house of laity. Controversy had centred on the provisions for parishes opposed to women bishops to request supervision by a stand-in male bishop. The measure needed two-thirds majorities in each of the synod's three houses. The votes were 44 for and two against in the house of bishops, 148 for and 45 against in the house of clergy, and 132 for and 74 against in the house of laity. The vote in the house of laity, at 64%, was just short of the required majority. A handful more of "yes" votes would have tipped them over the two-thirds mark.
Source
So even though there was a huge majority overall, because it didn't *quite* reach that mark it failed? That somehow doesn't feel fair.
Church of England comes dangerously close to accepting we no longer live in the 15th century.

Tomorrow's headline: England rejects Church of England.
Why are they still in the House of Lords?
Why are they still in the House of Lords?
Because slimy promise-breaking politicians that I didn't vote for are so much better.
Because slimy promise-breaking politicians that I didn't vote for are so much better.
The majority of lords are appointed based on their merits and abilities, the bishops are just kind of there because they always have been.
Tomorrow's headline: England rejects Church of England.
It's already seen as wildly out of touch and out of date.
Holy shit we are trying to give gay people equal rights and they are still arguing about women They are literally about a century behind
Surely being a Bishop is a job so surely it should fall under the UK's employment discrimination laws. Why is the Church exempt from so many laws?
Surely being a Bishop is a job so surely it should fall under the UK's employment discrimination laws.
It's already seen as wildly out of touch and out of date.
Unless you have grandkids, in which case it's seen as a lovely place to get tea on a saturday afternoon - and sometimes they even have jumble sales!
I actually understand why the vote turned out this way. You follow a religion, you follow its teachings. the teachings in this case are hat women shouldn't be bishops. Pick and choosing is one of the reasons I've never been religious. You can't modernise a religion without losing the reason it was founded int he first place.
God gets nervous when talking to women.
Tomorrow's headline: England rejects Church of England.
Headline after that: Church of England rejects Church of England
I talked to a Mormon who said their women can't be priests either, but it's okay because since the women can take advantage of the priests' knowledge by asking them questions, women don't have to do any of the actual work involved in becoming a priest, so they actually have it better. I was like ":I"

It's nice to know that the CoE is still a backwards, ignorant collective that doesn't deserve relevance in modern society.
Welcome to democracy
CofE isn't a democracy. The reasoning is that there are a large number of people who don't agree with the change, so things should stay as they are. The fact that there are a lot more who want to see the Church brought a little more up-to-date, apparently means nothing. Everybody I've spoken to have said that they think the Church should be less focused on Jewish traditions and more focused on the example and teachings of Jesus. Lol people are still trying to change religion? Good luck with that PAH HAHAHAHA
fuck that hit me like a brick
You know what he means. In this sort of situation at the time we're talking about, the women wouldn't be there. The teaching and ministry would be given to the men and the women would be shut away doing their work. I was talking about
Jesus gave no explicit teaching on the role of women in the church. In fact, he left no teaching at all concerning women as a class of people…. He treated every woman he met as a person in her own right.
E.g. Women aren't a different class of people who have to be treated differently to men. We're all just people.
Wow, that church is way behind the times. My church accepts gays and lesbians, and supports gay rights, marriages, and our top guy is gay. United Church of Canada, by far, is the most advanced, in recognizing these issues.
I heard on the BBC some MPs might introduce a bill removing the Church of England's ability to 'opt out' of equality legislation, therefore making it illegal for women not to be bishops. Seems somewhat heavy handed, but the impotent rage that would result from it would be entertaining.

Not only that, the electorals don't even have to vote for who the people they represent voted for. How's that for fair
Even the Archbishop slammed the result
