Preferably, you should use an amalgamation of review sources.
As far as I know yeah, if you're worried look up the actual author of the review to see what he's reviewed in the past. Honestly just read the content of the article, look up some other reviews and maybe some youtube gameplay if you wanna go further in determining wether the review is trustworthy.
don't just rely on any one single site to provide you the basis for reviews. by getting 4-5 reviews on a game from different sites(and by extension, different article writers), you're getting a fairer opinion and a better sense of what a game really has to offer to different people.
Honestly, I generally don't use any sort of review sites for reviews. Web forums generally handle that for me because they're the most likely to be genuine. For example, if you think the latest CoD seems neat, pop into the CoD thread when it comes out and see what people are bitching about and see if those things matter to you. If all I see is "the netcode is garbage, the game's unoptimized, the story is trash, and the weapons are totally unbalanced," I might skip it. [editline]a[/editline] The same applies to new IPs, as well. Destiny had a subreddit and General Games Discussion thread here before it even came out.
Not to mention reviewers love to spoil the plot. Still remember how that one screenshot of [sp]Wheatley attached to GLaDOS' chassis[/sp] was appended to every single Portal 2 review. I guessed most of the plot just from that. FP and reddit are surprisingly decent with the spoiler tags.
the games media is kind of a shitty joke so I'd not really trust them
Usually what I do is check reviews from YouTube users + a mixture of reviews from different review websites. Yeah, generally don't just rely on review sites as some of the reviews can seem jinxed or unreasonable due to some unnecessary point the reviewer harps on about (e.g. IGN on Pokemon Omega Ruby + Sapphire about the amount of water).
IGn gave the new Alien game a 5.9 so i take it with a grain salt
I usually gather a mix of Youtubers, sites and the opinions of the people in the game's general thread here before buying a game. Never take just one review as the person who's made that review may not be the target audience of the game you're buying and may lead you to potentially miss out on a game that may be catered to people like you. Another thing; this applies only to multiplayer-based games (i.e a new Battlefield), but try to give that game maybe a week, two weeks or even a month to see if the playerbase is still intact or not. I'm doing that with Battlefield 1 to make sure that I won't end up burning away $90 worth of my local cash on a game that's going to be another Division/Battlefront/Hardline AKA fucking dead playerbase.
I prefer to have the opinion of a handful of independent reviewers/youtubers whom I know are honest and know what they're talking about, with the addition of community reviews, forums, etc.
