Ministers intend to relax regulations governing the minimum level of sugar which a product calling itself jam or marmalade can contain. The government says the change will boost the British economy. But Lib Dem MP Tessa Munt argues this will result in cheaper, runnier spreads which have a shorter shelf-life.
i cut out the middle man a long time ago. Now I just through sugar on some toast and chomp down.
Sounds like you guys are in a bit of a pickle.
RIP Peanut butter and Jam sandwiches - 2013 RIP Jam on Toast + Sandwich - 2013 RIP Jam on Bagels - 2013 You'll never taste the same again :(
Hah! I eat savoury food on toast! Take that!
What I find funny about this is that it's a Liberal Democrat arguing against increased jam regulations over there... Whereas over here, our liberal democrats are behind huge pushes to lower obesity by regulating food. Michelle Obama and Mayor Bloomberg specifically.
Quick, someone enlighten them on Biscoff spread.
Quick, someone enlighten them on Biscoff spread.
It's made out of a certain type of biscuit, apparently. Also this heresy mustn't be allowed to pass; jams and marmalades are meant to be thick and long-lasting, and all this legislation means is that we'll fucking import proper jam and marmalade from the continent whilst the shite "anti-jams" rot on the fucking shelves.
I think the jam industry needs some other kind of regulations...
I think the jam industry needs some other kind of regulations...
It was holding them back. Now they can create the perfect Jam, 100% sugar.
It was holding them back. Now they can create the perfect Jam, 100% sugar.
That's impossible, the best I've seen was 99.1% chemically pure

I swear to God man if I can't keep making peanut butter and raspberry jam sandwiches I will scissor kick a bitch in the tits. First they took my flapjacks and now this, fuck this world.
It doesn't sound like Miss Munt has much of a clue about jam.The more sugar jam has, the longer it lasts, the worse it is for your health, the cheaper it is to make, and the worse it tastes. For years, I have demanded at least 50% fruit in jam. The vivid colour Miss Munt makes such a fuss about is horrible artificial colouring. The best jam looks "natural" - a bit dull in comparison.
Sounds like the UK is in a bit of a JAM AHEUEHUEUAHEAUHEUAHUEHUEAHEUHUEHEUHUE No seriously fuck that. I'd be pissed. If it isn't thick jam, there's no reason to use it. If I wanted to put runny, sugary, watery condiment on my toast I'd do just fucking that, but I don't. I'm in the US so none of this really affects me (Up until the UK goes into anarchy because of this, mark my words) but I'd still be pissed off if it happened to me.
I don't even eat breakfast anyway so I could care less.
Actually she's arguing against new, more relaxed regulations
Wait, what? More relaxed regulations about the minimum sugar content? I'm... What is going on?
i cut out the middle man a long time ago. Now I just through sugar on some toast and chomp down.
Dunno if you're joking, but sugar and cinnamon on buttered toast is pretty good.
Wait, what? More relaxed regulations about the minimum sugar content? I'm... What is going on?

Reducing the minimum sugar content in jam from 60% to 50%
Currently needs to be 60% sugar They want to lower the bar to 50%
Nutella made jam obsolete, anyway. Nutella, salty spread (something quark based, cheese, boiled egg, maybe fine fish paste, some of these with garlic is great), or bust. [editline]30th October 2013[/editline] Jam is for bakery and sauces.
Jokes on them. i eat Marmite on my toast. if you don't have an oven. you could just use a toaster, then microwave cheese inbetween it or something. I'm no scientist, but how is reducing sugar in jam making it runnier? i would've thought that most of the consistency is from the preservation process, just with jam adding to the texture/flavor. If worse comes to worst, i wonder how long it'll be until people make their own jam, sounds like some sort of farm village get together where they rustle up some homegrown veg, using hallowed out carrots as a replacement for bread, then somehow trading it for a few starting chickens.
Currently needs to be 60% sugar They want to lower the bar to 50%
And Munt says it'll result in worse jam... Arguing against the lowered restrictions. Which means she's arguing for less healthy jam... Which means I was right.
