From what I understand, they basically did that to Craig for real. He was in talks to replace Letterman and then Stephen Colbert came out of basically nowhere and got it. It's my bet that Craig was probably a little upset with CBS about that.

I mean, Grant built Geoff for Craig, it wasn't built for or by the show or CBS.

I like Craig Ferguson. He might shamelessly recycle jokes night after night and shit, but somehow he still makes it fun to watch. He is my favorite late night host. But I don't care for whoever's voicing Geoff. I thought it was a hell of a lot funnier when they only gave Geoff like 4-5 pre-recorded lines each night, and it seemed like his controls were being handled by somebody barely competent enough to push buttons. I liked that they would sometimes cut over to Geoff and he'd just be totally inanimate that time because the operator wasn't paying attention, or he would respond about 5 seconds late with something that didn't even make sense in that context. The guy who does the voice live now just isn't very funny.
