CHENNAI: Rahul has been virtually in flames four times since he was born two-and-a-half months ago. Doctors say it's due to a rare condition called spontaneous human combustion (SHC).

A small spark, which need not be an obvious one, anywhere nearby, can trigger the fire, said the doctor. "Let us say if the child is covered with a silk cloth which can generate static electricity, the combustible gas and the electricity can cause fire," he said.
That would be terrifying

You've never heard of spontaneous human combustion?

Had no idea it was actually a "condition" up until now
wow someone already added this case to the notable examples section.
edit:aaa
judge dredd taught me about this
can somebody medically explain how spontaneous human combustion is possible?
Sounds kind of like bunk to be honest. (As most cases of spontaneous human combustion seem to be)
Has any doctor actually seen the baby catch fire? Munchausen by proxy seems like a much more reasonable explanation for why a baby would keep turning up at the hospital with burns.
I didn't know spontaneous combustion was actually a thing.
can somebody medically explain how spontaneous human combustion is possible?
it literally says in the article how people suspect it may happen
Give the baby a water suit, that should solve the problem.
Had no idea it was actually a "condition" up until now
It has no solid scientific backing, only mere hypothesising..
Don't get too excited.
So he's like Pyro, but he can't actually withstand the flames
that kinda sucks

I want a more in-depth explanation than

Did you read the article, or just the OP?
A plausible hypothesis for SHC is that some bacteria, such as the methanogenic micro-organism-archaebacteria, in the intestine convert the food into methane, which is a combustible substance," said Dr Gajiwala.
I don't believe this. A baby who keeps "lighting on fire" seems to be the victim of abuse or Munchausen by proxy.

Refreshed twice to see if anyone posted it. Decided to go for it and pasted it in and hit quick reply in 5 seconds.
Ended up 3 posts late. :suicide:

READ THE ARTICLE.
There are many theories about the poorly understood condition, ranging from high acetone content in the body to the paranormal. Some doctors say everyone has certain amount of alcohol present in their blood and when its content is high, it combines with the gases in the body; resulting in burns.

"The boy should not be near inflammable substances. It's better if he is kept in a cold place," said Dr Babu.
Doctor's advice is stick your baby in the fridge
I know just the place for him.

Dear Diary, today my heart leapt when Agent Scully suggested spontaneous human combustion.
Yeah ever since the buyout Rares condition has made me occasionally catch on fire also.
