Spy Drone that was shot down in Eastern Ukraine, and then taken by the Ukrainian SBU.
Ukrainian authorities captured a Russian spy drone in eastern Ukraine, security officials said on Friday.
The clunky aircraft has the look of a high-school science project gone bad. But Ukraine's SBU security service claims it is a modification of Russia's Orlan-10 drone that has 3D mapping and real-time battle monitoring capabilities.
It can carry a thermal camera for night vision, a stills camera, and a geo-stabilized video camera, depending on the specific build, the SBU said.
This isn't surprising nobody should be acting surprised
I was expecting something like a Russian equivalent of the U-2 getting shot down, not a little drone.

I realized the fucked up connotation after I read the title a few times and thought "Wait."
"Oh fuck I should have put drone."

There's not much of a point for planes like U-2 really.
Ultra high altitude/speed spyplanes got mostly replaced by satellites and tiny RC drones like this thing.
Low altitude close-up recon with some tiny, dirt-cheap drone has pretty much no disadvantages over sending something big and complicated, while having all the obvious advantages.
Planes like U-2 and SR-71 are simply obsolete today.

Obsolete or not, it just seems surprising for Russia to be using Drone-tech when everybody makes fun of their clunky, clap-trap hunk'a'junk contraptions that are always 50 years out of date.
Awww I was hoping to see some pics of the almost mythical Russian spy planes

To be fair, it looks like they made a drone by shooting a shrink ray at a clunky, clap-trap hunk'a'junk contraption.
Looks like Ukraine yet again tries to do a late April 1st joke. Wiki says that it's used mostly when building aviation complexes. So, if we actually wanted to take pictures of Eastern Ukraine or something like that, why not use Inspector? It is much smaller but still can do the same thing that Orlan-3M does. I am pretty sure that out Ministry of Defense is not actually retarded (unlike the Ukrainian counterpart), so I want to congratulate Ukraine with yet another unsuccessful joke.

I haven't seen anybody make fun of Russia using clap-trap junk. I think you're confusing Russia with China.

You can build your own "drone" with legal civilian parts for few thousand dollars (although flying it (mainly out of your line of sight)) might be varying degree of illegal.
It's not rocket science.

And even China has lots of advanced millitary stuff by now. Their main problem is with air force, cause their most numerous fighter is a chinese copy of mig 21, but they have a lot of modern aircrafts too.
I'm sorry, was that a drone, or did Putin just duct tape a camera onto one of his toy planes, give it to his army and go "send dis to Ukraine now."

lol go fan boy somewhere else if you would please
Yeah the wing shape and tail totally looks like Orlan. Also I wonder with that they took it down that it arrived at that condition to the ground.

I don't understand the problem with this toy. It's obvously very cheap, so it's not a problem to lose a couple or two of these things, it's small and hard to detect, and it's capable to do it's job. Yeah, it doesn't look very fancy, but is it really necessary?

Just a gunfire probably. It looks too good to be taken down by something more serious.

I see no bullet impacts or any other shit, the shooter must've been a bullseye or something to take it with one bullet. Also it would have at least broken wings considering that it was flying at altitude.
The entire thing just doesn't even look like Orlan-10 as SBU claims, very funny Ukraine.

The wing could break from hitting the ground, but yeah, no signs of bullets is quite strange. Could have been a sniper though. They have a pretty big enough caliber to take this thing down with one shot.
It probably just lost contact with the pilot and crashlanded.

U2 is still one of the only planes that can do ultra high atmospheric research without using a sounding rocket, otherwise you can also send them into these places where they have AA but not the telephone pole sized rockets required to hit this thing

You can take it down with .22 pistol shot (if pistol bullet could fly that far), it's not armored in any way. Hit it anywhere and it will go down with either electronics shattered, antennae severed or aerodynamics fucked.
Thing is, a bullet hit would damage it, and there's no entry point visible, unless it was hit exactly in the tip of its nose. What most likely happened, the thing's lost contact with operator's station for some reason and came down.

Everybody makes fun of Russia using crap, out-dated tech.
Its only recently that China has taken the spotlight due to their rather quick rise to economic power. Previously, it was always a Russian stereotype that they had the junk.
Konscripkt reporting. Red Alert 2 style.
Hey at least this drone is properly built unlike North Korea's.
Maybe a bird decided to attack it and even a slight knock sent it careening down into the ground.
Just like how recently a Quadrocopter was sent up into the air and the loud buzzing of its 4 turbines made a frequency similar to that of local Bees, resulting in the Drone being followed by them.
BEES. NOT THE BEES.
But yeah, as others are saying, it most likely lost connection with its operator, thus resulting in a crash one way or another.
Lost connection, ran out of gas, etc. Plenty of ways for drones to crash without actually shooting them. It looks like an Orlan drone with a few differences. To be honest, this could be a modification made to the drone, or even a very well done DIY drone built similar to the Orlan that the rebels are using.

There are still quite a few tactical advantages to those, albeit slowly being phased out due to new drone designs.
A small-ish drone like this can't really be used to effectively scan large areas for various AA emplacements, etc, where larger manned recon aircraft shine.

The soviet union was miles ahead of the US in drone tech up until the collapse or late 80s.
They were using drone tanks in the 30s lol

I call BS on bees bringing down a multicopter.

He didn't say it was brought down, he just said the bees followed it.
