• First first-party Xbox One games going to take up 35 GB to 47 GB of your hard disc for the required
Today we learn that from the three first-party titles, how much space they will take up to install the game on your hard drive. For Forza Motorsport 5 and Dead Rising 3 a 35 GB installation is required while for Ryse: Son of Rome a heavier 47 GB installation is required. We also come to know that neither Dead Rising or Ryse: Son of Rome will have local co-op. Meaning you have to go Online if you want to play with your buddies. Take note that the Xbox One has a 500 GB hard disk that is not replaceable unlike the Playstation 4. 35 GB doesn't sound too bad. The non swappable HDD on the other hand sounds fucking awful.
Isn't the entire point of console gaming Plug and Play?
500 gb harddisk isn't more than 10 or so games, if additional stuff is taken into account. Jesus Christ :V
Good thing I have a bunch of memory sticks.
A rough estimate tells me this means there's "only" space for 11 games on the xbone. Although you can connect a USB 3.0 drive to it and store games & shit on that, but that's kind of a clunky solution compared to swapping out the internal HDD for a much bigger one. Which the PS4 supports doing just like the PS3, although it's still laptop-size harddrives.
Aren't you able to play while you install anyways?
Isn't the entire point of console gaming Plug and Play?
That used to be the idea, now they're more of an entertainment platform.

For about 70-80 dollars you have a 1 TB hard drive for your PS3/PS4.

The games are close to double the size of my xbox360 hard drive. Innovation is nifty.
Good thing I have a bunch of memory sticks.
It''s be JUST like the good ol' cartridge days. Swap out USB sticks for playing a different game
If games are going to require an installation and be nearly 50gigabytes, then a 1Tb HDD should be standard
1TB is already becoming a desktop PC standard as it is. My PC from four years ago had 500 GB. How they could consider this (and the fact that you can't swap it out with a bigger one in future) is something that blows my mind.

Jesus CHRIST, does Microsoft not know what compression software is? OR is having "Large" games more of a selling point of the system?
The games are close to double the size of my xbox360 hard drive. Innovation is nifty.
This isn't innovation it's "oh look we've got disks that can hold 50gb of shit why compress anything anymore!"
Jesus CHRIST, does Microsoft not know what compression software is? OR is having "Large" games more of a selling point of the system?
Hardly exclusive to Microsoft. Knack is going to be about 40 GB.
I wouldn't be surprised if JUST AFTER the launch (3 months or so), Microsoft introduces a model with a unreplaceable 1TB drive.
This is definitely going to be the case. The Xbox 360 did this, the PS3 did it, and the Xbox One will too.
This isn't innovation it's "oh look we've got disks that can hold 50gb of shit why compress anything anymore!"
because shit happens when you compress files of that size
I don't know about you, but I never have more than 14 games installed at a time on my PC.
Funfact: You can uninstall the games you're not playing anymore.
This is definitely going to be the case. The Xbox 360 did this, the PS3 did it, and the Xbox One will too.
At least you've always been able to upgrade the PS3 HDD. I swapped to a 120GB drive pretty quickly. As for compression, it would increase the load times significantly. Assuming zero compression is in use already.
Funfact: You can uninstall the games you're not playing anymore.
Funfact: Then you wouldn't be able to almost instantly play them in-case you feel like doing that. You'd have to enjoy huge amounts of updates being downloaded first.
Sure, it's game specific, but why the fuck are a lot of them trying to avoid local coop nowadays? That's like, one of the main selling points of a console. Playing with friends all in one room.
Funfact: You can uninstall the games you're not playing anymore.
Not always relevant for people who plan to play multiplayer games like Forza, COD, Titanfall, Destiny, etc. Although I agree, I don't get why someone would have 5+ major games installed at a time.
Not always relevant for people who plan to play multiplayer games like Forza, COD, Titanfall, Destiny, etc. Although I agree, I don't get why someone would have 5+ major games installed at a time.
I think it's fair to say that you could uninstall games if you want to. However - 500 GB is a ridiculous starting point, in a time when 1TB are the norm as games slowly creep past the 35 GB mark in size. It is also ridiculous that I can't upgrade my hard drive in the future, knowing fully well that Microsoft will capitalise on this by selling future iterations of the X1 with higher hard drives, leaving early adopters looking like chumps. Asking me to work around the limitation for a piece of technology that is supposed to represent the next generation of gaming does nothing to address its inherent weakness, both in hardware specification and extremely poor company decision making.
You can also pop in a SSD which is pretty neat. For about 70-80 dollars you have a 1 TB hard drive for your PS3/PS4.
SSD's aren't tremendously stable yet though, are they? (That's not rhetorical.) Also, $80 for a console pehiphery is quite a lot, to be fair.
Not always relevant for people who plan to play multiplayer games like Forza, COD, Titanfall, Destiny, etc. Although I agree, I don't get why someone would have 5+ major games installed at a time.
Ohay let's pop in GTA V for a bit of free roaming hard on inducing useless murder. Oh bugger, uninstalled the game. Oh well I'll play AC then, free roaming that is always fun, fuckin hell, uninstalled it.... Fine, Halo then. Ah fuck it, nevermind, i'll just throw this shit out the window and buy a ps4.
Jesus CHRIST, does Microsoft not know what compression software is? OR is having "Large" games more of a selling point of the system?
not microsoft's fault, it's the developer's decision to include data compression. and hell, for all we know, that 35gb game might be a compressed 40gb game.
I don't know about you, but I never have more than 14 games installed at a time on my PC.
At a glance, I have over 50 installed. Convenience, really.
