Well yeah, he made that song his own. Brought emotion out of the lyrics and removed the whine.
I disagree with the Alien Ant Farm. It's a parody. I prefer the original video also.
Hurt is a tricky thing. Having seen it performed during the Downward Spiral tour, I have a great affection for the original. The Cash version is a different song entirely, he makes it more intimate. I'll happily listen to either.

I don't know of a lot of people who prefer the original of this song. Cash man, you can't deny.
Also while we're on the topic of covers I must say The Exies' cover of Talking Head's Once In A Lifetime is so horrendously bad it's insulting. Basically they changed it from world influenced art-pop to generic post-grunge crap devoid of any originality and emotion at all. It's bad.

I agree that Jeff Buckley's voice brought the song out like nothing else but I gotta love the original too. When it's performed live, Leonard puts the voice with the lyrics like it is.
also Rufus Wainwright's cover of it is nice.

Leonard Cohen has a great voice and it really is a well written song but the actual musical arrangements are so cheesy I can't stand the original.

Both the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt and Nirvana's cover of Where Did You Sleep Last Night are great, and I really think they are better than the original.

Ram Jam covering Leadbelly's "Black Betty", even though I REALLY like Leadbelly's. Some people might say Van Halen's cover of You Really Got Me is better than the Kinks original, I prefer the Kinks, personally. Oh and Santana covering Black Magic Woman...Most of Santana's covers are better than the original imo.

I prefer this cover of Supernaut over the original. Trent Reznor's vocals works really well for this song.
