Then, they are depicted pounding 3,000-year-old sculptures with hammers until they are completely shattered. Tens of militants are seen using ladders, hammers and drills to destroy every statue in the museum, including a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity dating back to the 7th century BC. "These ruins that are behind me, they are idols and statues that people in the past used to worship instead of Allah," a bearded IS militant tells the camera, with the immense, partially-demolished winged-bull in the background. "The so-called Assyrians and Akkadians and others looked to gods for war, agriculture and rain to whom they offered sacrifices," he added, with reference to the ancient civilizations that lived in Mesopotamia for more than 5,000 years in what is now Iraq, eastern Syria and southern Turkey. "The Prophet Mohammed took down idols with his bare hands when he went into Mecca. We were ordered by our prophet to take down idols and destroy them, and the companions of the prophet did this after this time, when they conquered countries."
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/iraq-isis-take-sledgehammers-priceless-assyrian-artefacts-mosul-museum-video-1489616 This shit is fucking heartbreaking to watch. 3000 years old worth of history destroyed by these people.
For fucks sake.
Christ. I remember seeing some of these in my art history books. That's just sad to see such destruction of ancient culture.
These people only listen to words like [del]carpet bombing[/del] surgical placed drone strikes
I just don't understand what the point of this is. How do ancient artifacts hinder their mission? "These ruins that are behind me, they are idols and statues that people in the past used to worship instead of Allah," I'm no historian, but let's say this is true- Does anyone even follow these "idols" anymore? This is ancient history, not a Christian museum.
as a historian this angers me greatly. its not even like people worship these effigies anymore ffs

Well, at least there is nothing valuable in that museum now. Might as well level it.
This angers me as it is in our time that these artifacts are destoyed and will shame us all in history forever now.
I saw some of them in Berlin, when the germans brought them back as artefacts. And after seeing this, I'm actually glad they brought them over, alot more could had been destroyed. Below is one of the winged lions from Syria, now housed in Berlin's Pergamon museum. [t]http://i.imgur.com/lPzW8TE.jpg[/t]
thats a really fucked up line of logic "these idols were worshipped by people who existed before the prophet muhammad even spoke of the Koran, therefore it is absolutely haram and we must destroy it" like what the fuck? these guys might as well smash the earth itself because there's been humans that lived on it that didnt worship Allah(though knowing these nuts they would if they could)
We could have had this under control ages ago if we weren't afraid of another War on Terror situation. But nobody wants to throw any military force at it other than airstrikes, and the local military entities either don't want to or can't do anything about it. Everyone involved has handled this poorly, and now they've caused irreparable damage to the cultural heritage of the region. It's disgusting.
They had/used rebar 3000 years ago, or just some of the statues not original?
Hopefully most of these artifacts have had the 3D scanning done and the records are safely stored. And if they have, I vote someone 3D print and cast new ones immediately. Might not be the same as the originals, but it would be a fun middle finger to those assholes.
They had/used rebar 3000 years ago, or just some of the statues not original?
Probably replicas. The region's been volatile for a while, it would make sense that they would make copies after the Baghdad museum incident.
It's alright. One day, there'll be no trace left of IS except a section in the history books. No 'artifacts' because they don't want to make any.

And they have justification for doing so in their eyes, because of what's printed out in the Quran about only following Allah and something about killing infidels.
Heh. What you could do is to set up a cache of ancient artifacts that are in reality plaster casts loaded with high explosive, and then leak the location to Daesh. First hammer strike is going to be a doozy.
I think it is haram that they don't shoot themselves in the head instead.
what a bunch of dicks

That was exactly the impression he got from his captors. They are only interested in destruction, they do not know how to create a sustainable society.

It's in the Hadith, which is the Islamic equivalent of the Jewish Oral Torah. Basically, it's Caliphical interpretation of the Qu'ran. The Qu'ran itself says not to harm other followers of "The Book," which is the Torah and the Bible. Mohammed was a pretty smart man, he didn't want Islam being completely eradicated by the Jews and Christians in the region at the time, but he set it up to allow the Islamic empire to expand throughout the non-Abrahamic states in the region. That's actually what makes the IS so strange, is that they claim to be following the Qu'ran, but the Qu'ran basically says not to do any of the stuff they're doing. They're drawing directly from the Caliphs, specifically Crusade-era Caliph doctrine. That's a major heresy in the modern Islamic interpretation. Leads me to believe there's some other motive behind this than just furthering Islam.
Its scary that they can confuse history with worship. Nobody goes to a museum like that to worship those things, they go there to learn about their past. [editline]26th February 2015[/editline] Stuff like this is sort of why I'm glad museums are very finicky about repatriotizing priceless artifacts, the middle east is a very tough place to send human history
Leads me to believe there's some other motive behind this than just furthering Islam.
I think we passed that mark a loooong time ago
these fucking savages will get what's coming to them

I honestly don't know how they would ever function as a real state.
They smashed up a bunch of 3,000 year old idols because their mindset is 2,000 years out of date.
These ruins that are behind me, they are idols and statues that people in the past used to worship instead of Allah"
Islam wasn't even around back them, what were they going to worship?
What does this even accomplish These guys are literally starting to become cartoon villains. Doing dumb destructive things for no reason

If you destroy the past and remove all traces of it then you can say how the past was more easily.
