• Attorney General Jeff Sessions calls Hawaii "just an island out in the pacific", anger ensues
A remark U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made earlier this week about a judge in Hawaii isn't sitting well with the Aloha State. In an interview on the The Mark Levin Show, Sessions was asked about the status of President Trump's executive order on travel. "I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the president of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and constitutional power," Sessions replied. The Justice Department tried to clarify Sessions' remarks on Thursday, according to CNN. "Hawaii is, in fact, an island in the Pacific — a beautiful one where the Attorney General's granddaughter was born," a spokesman told the network. "The point, however, is that there is a problem when a flawed opinion by a single judge can block the President's lawful exercise of authority to keep the entire country safe."
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/04/21/525050208/hawaii-tells-jeff-sessions-have-some-respect
With Trump's penchant for executive ordering anything with Obama's signature on into oblivion does this mean Hawaii will become a failing fake state?
Yeah a judge that he voted for as well
The Justice Department tried to clarify Sessions' remarks on Thursday, according to CNN. "Hawaii is, in fact, an island in the Pacific — a beautiful one where the Attorney General's granddaughter was born,"
this doesn't help him at all. it makes him sound like even more of a jackass for what he said.
Reminds me of Ted Cruz's comments on New York values. When Republicans know they can't win in a state they are all too eager to throw them under the bus for cheap political points.
well it is an island in the pacific to be fair.
and apart of the damn country...
well it is an island in the pacific to be fair.
How does this make the comment any less dumb? Are you completely ignoring the context of the phrase?
With Trump's penchant for executive ordering anything with Obama's signature on into oblivion does this mean Hawaii will become a failing fake state?
We have always been at war with Westpacific
well it is an island in the pacific to be fair.
It's actually several islands that make up an island chain in the Pacific. With one of the largest tourism economies in the country.
It's actually several islands that make up an island chain in the Pacific. With one of the largest tourism economies in the country.
yeah but he's only sitting on one of them
and apart of the damn country...
A part* [editline]22nd April 2017[/editline] Otherwise you're saying the same thing as Jeff implied
well it is an island in the pacific to be fair.
It doesn't make his statement any less demeaning, removing the implication that those in Hawaii are somehow less than Americans living on the continent.
The reason this Judge on "an island in the Pacific" is able to do what he did is because he is a federal judge of the United States of America.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions calls Hawaii "just an island out in the pacific"
This might be a bit pedantic but the "just" was inferred and added in by the author or OP. So the title should be 'Attorney General Jeff Sessions calls Hawaii just "an island out in the pacific"', if anything.
Pretty much made in the spirit of the statement, not the literal fact of it.
You shouldnt include Just in the quotation marks then.
this doesn't help him at all. it makes him sound like even more of a jackass for what he said.
"Some of my best friends are Hawaiians!"
You shouldnt include Just in the quotation marks then.
Honestly that was more of a typo; it wasn't intentional.
It's actually several islands that make up an island chain in the Pacific. With one of the largest tourism economies in the country.
With about zero parcipation/be affected in matters that deal with this action that was denied.
With about zero parcipation/be affected in matters that deal with this action that was denied.
Why does it matter when it's a federal judge we're talking about here?
Hawaii wasn't the only judicial dissident.
The Hawaii hearing was among four court proceedings Wednesday in which the travel ban was challenged. There were two hearings in Seattle and another in Greenbelt, Md.
The fourth hearing was in Maryland I believe. Sessions' comments clearly attack and belittle Hawaii's significance in the nation purely due to its separation from the mainland.
With about zero parcipation/be affected in matters that deal with this action that was denied.
Are judges in Hawaii -- which I'll remind you is fully and completely a state within the United States of America -- somehow less able to interpret the law and constitution and give fair rulings than their mainland counterparts?
With about zero parcipation/be affected in matters that deal with this action that was denied.
Hawaii is still part of the United States - they would be affected in some way.
can we remove tudd's big add avatar, it was funny for a time but it's time for it to go
With about zero parcipation/be affected in matters that deal with this action that was denied.
This argument is the political equivalent of a spoiled brat changing the rules of a game at the last moment to suit their needs. A federal judge is a federal judge, doesn't matter where they are. All the crying and complaining in the world can't change that.
Why does it matter when it's a federal judge we're talking about here?
Oh the judge can totally do it. I personally think that it is just a maneuver to take up time considering the historical precedence on immigration control will probably overturn it in the supreme court. Just going to point out still that Hawaii has about little to no stake in what the matter pertains to though.
Just going to point out still that Hawaii has about little to no stake in what the matter pertains to though.
And what does that have to do with the thread? This article is about Sessions commenting on the judge, not Hawaii itself.
Oh the judge can totally do it. Just going to point out still that Hawaii has about little to no stake in what the matter pertains to though.
Hawaii as part of the United states. Say whatever the fuck you want, but if you're really going to use that as your metric, then I guess we can disregard your state when it's important to do so [editline]22nd April 2017[/editline] And you'd be a hypocrite to argue against that
Oh the judge can totally do it. I personally think that it is just a maneuver to take up time considering the historical precedence on immigration control will probably overturn it in the supreme court. Just going to point out still that Hawaii has about little to no stake in what the matter pertains to though.
So you acknowledge that Hawaii is a state in the United States of America and that the judge completely had both the right and power to do what he did as a federal judge in the United States of America but you also have the same attitude that sessions has? The "oh Hawaii, you're barely part of the USA, let the real Americans deal with this since this affects us and not you" attitude? That's disgusting, Tudd. I can't begin to wrap my head around this sudden exclusionary stance sessions has simply because a judge exercised his power. It's really telling.
