Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi said he was "really sorry" for his actions and asked for forgiveness. He was accused of leading rebel forces who destroyed historic shrines at the world heritage site in 2012. It is the first time that the court in The Hague has tried a case of cultural destruction. It is also the first time a suspected Islamist militant has stood trial at the ICC and the first time a suspect has pleaded guilty.
Burn him. Seriously, this shit makes my blood scream.
Make an example of him and ignore those crocodile tears.
Really nice to see a case of international justice actually working

The fact that he willingly admitted to his crimes and is clearly up to taking whatever punishment is given clearly shows that he is conscious of his decision. Also have you guys never heard of martyrs
Yeah, go easy on him. He's really sorry guys! Fuck this scumbag.
What I mean is going out for blood for someone who is already going through the process of being charged by the courts is redundant. A long sentence, sure. Being banned from EU countries, sure. Demands that he release information on militants, sure. I'm not saying "go easy". But whatever bizarre, weirdo punishments are being brought up are, well, bizarre. He's no Al-Baghdadi

The sole fact that he is a part of IS should be enough to lock him up and throw away the keys.

"dont go easy on him for saying sorry, but don't go underworld medieval fiend on him either"?

You know, just a bit of 1st degree burn on his ass cheek. But really, I don't think he meant that literally
What an asshole, he's helped cause irreparable damage to priceless history for a worthless cause. Also, it's early in the morning and I saw ICC thinking it meant "Ice Crown Citadel" like in fucking WoW.
The sole fact that he is a part of IS should be enough to lock him up and throw away the keys.
but he's from mali?

I'm surprised he actually got caught and charged and not go all out and die.
quotes
Oh... Heh I already pass those comments off as momentary overreactions. [editline]22nd August 2016[/editline]
He's not part of IS, he's part of Ansar Dine [editline]22nd August 2016[/editline] Also, this is the first guilty plea in the history of the ICC so it is kind of remarkable
Huh, still, he was a huge dick. Not warranting going medieval on him though.
Yeah, go easy on him. He's really sorry guys! Fuck this scumbag.
The civilized world doesn't do cruel and unusual punishments. He's not gonna go off easy by getting several decades if not life in prison.
Yeah, go easy on him. He's really sorry guys! Fuck this scumbag.
imo life in prison is a far more brutal punishment than death. If you had to choose between staring at a concrete wall in a 6 by 10 cell with a tiny slit for a window 23.5 hours a day until you die of old age, or getting a bullet put in your head, which one would you choose?
The maximum sentence is 30 years in prison guys

sorry that you don't understand the metaphorical context of "burn him." wtf where did the quote go
I wonder where would a person charged by the ICC get locked up. Its not like we have some sort of an International Neutral Prison on the middle of the Atlantic or anything. I mean there was Australia but they're full.
sorry that you don't understand the metaphorical context of "burn him." wtf where did the quote go
lmfao what "metaphorical context"

Also have you guys never heard of martyrs
I don't really think martyrs apply to IS - there's no way that anyone in their right mind would sympathize with them. Not that I think he should be killed, but he should be put in prison for a very long time - I don't care if he's sorry, he chose to do this.
The civilized world doesn't do cruel and unusual punishments. He's not gonna go off easy by getting several decades if not life in prison.
Yeah I agree it's punishment enough altho for the sake of argument what is cruel and unusual? I mean, could death penalty always be considered cruel and unusual? Under the ICC, aka the pussiest court yet, death penalty is forbidden entirely, and when looking at the responses here some of you seem find it, well, pathetic? As for life in prison, I don't know if this guy's sentence can be renewed or something (probably not sentenced for life?) but it depends on the quality of prison facilities, general standards of their accomodation, treatment and opportunities to do productive or self-improving activities whether life in prison would be worse than death.
If you had to choose between staring at a concrete wall in a 6 by 10 cell with a tiny slit for a window 23.5 hours a day until you die of old age
You could meditate and achieve full enlightenment
Pussiest court yet ROFL. They deal with really complex international cases where political tempering and the lot are involved. They don't deal with some random shoplifting that can be solved in an afternoon.
You think I don't know that? They deal with war crimes and crimes against humanity. The pussiest court remark was just a facetious reminder that they don't practice the use of death penalty, let alone by burning, thank goodness.
Maybe I'm weird or something, and yeah he should absolutely serve out his sentence, but if he's asking for forgiveness why not give it? Let the sentence be penance.
