The £200m vessel will be named after the world-renowned naturalist and broadcaster, Science Minister Jo Johnson confirmed. The move, coming days before Sir David turns 90, will recognise his "legacy in British broadcasting", he said.
Sir David said he was "truly honoured" by the decision.
He said that he hoped "everyone who suggested a name will feel just as inspired to follow the ship's progress as it explores our polar regions".
"I have been privileged to explore the world's deepest oceans alongside amazing teams of researchers, and with this new polar research ship they will be able to go further and discover more than ever before."
While the ship will not be named Boaty McBoatface, one of the remotely operated sub-sea vehicles will be named Boaty in recognition of the vote.
[h=2]'Inspirational names'[/h]A website inviting suggestions to name the ship had attracted huge interest, with"Boaty McBoatface" being the big favourite.
But Mr Johnson said there were "more suitable names" for the vessel.
He said: "The public provided some truly inspirational and creative names, and while it was a difficult decision I'm delighted that our state-of-the-art polar research ship will be named after one of the nation's most cherished broadcasters and natural scientists.
So much for having a poll in the first place
Did anyone really expect them to actually name it Boaty McBoatface?

Yes?

Well at least they recognise the leading name!
Shame but I do see where they're coming from. Would've been funny, though, had they gone with the original choice of name.
LONDON WILL BE RIOTING FOR DAYS
Yes?
They did made it clear at the time of the poll that the results are just a suggestion.

Bloody go""amn right

I was hoping they'd have a sense of humour tbh but so it goes
At least the top vote wasn't Hitler Did Nothing Wrong or Diabeetus :v
Boaty McBoatface is a fucking stinking name tbf.

What a funny thing to say.
If I didn't know any better I'd say you were being serious.
Its nice because Attenborough was highly ranked in that list, at least they actually took something from the vote.
This is the best thing they could have done
One of its remote DSV's is named Boaty, so its a compromise I guess. A government isn't going to name a state of the art research ship Boaty McBoatface.
imagine other countries' vessels coming across it in international waters or something
"why does your boat have such a silly name"
"we let our people decide"
good luck being taken seriously, especially if this ship is intended for research [sp]RIP great british ~empire~[/sp]

i mean if ISIS started saying they're gonna attack us with wham-bam-talibans it'd be hard to take it seriously
Wow what pricks. It is a research vessel. Have a sense of humor. It has zero need to honor anything. It doesn't need to project any sort of authority. Give it the fun name that people chose, and enjoy the free publicity.

You get what you ask for.
Kind of funny they called one of the remote subs Boaty, since it's not even a boat.
wastemen
Let's hope that this is a catalyst to initiate revolution
Shouldn't have asked the internet for naming suggestions in the first place tbh. Leave it to people with "a sense of humor" (because research vessel Boaty McBoatface is only funny if you're retarded, I dare not to even think about the other suggestions if that's the most humorous one) to make a stupid suggestion and then vote it in.
What they're gonna end up with is boring though.
Why are people actually getting upset over this
Well at least they went with Attenborough and not Poppy-Mai.
Attenborough deserves to be recognized for his work. This is the best name they could've picked if they weren't going to go with the popular name.

well it is their vessel, they can pick whatever they want

He should take responsibility for it and narrate it as it unfolds.
Here, the common pub hooligan attempts to overturn a two ton car.
I actually liked Pillar of Autumn more.
Yeah they made it abundantly clear that they were just suggestions, and anyone who expected otherwise is as stupid as the jackasses who honestly thought this was funny.
What was the point in even asking though
