Turkey could hold a referendum on whether it should continue its bid to join the European Union if the accession process does not move forward, the country’s foreign minister said on Thursday. "We [get] our power from the nation. If the EU negotiation process [does not move forward], as President Erdogan tried to say, then we may ask the public whether we should continue negotiations," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told a news conference in Ankara on Thursday. Cavusoglu's comments came one day after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey too could hold a Brexit style referendum on its process to join the EU.
Source Oh no, what a disaster. Surely, Turkey cannot do this to us; what would become of Europe? Save us, Merkel! Save our sinful souls!
And all the other EU countries would rejoice!
From what I read, I'm pretty sure it meant they are just going to stop trying to join the EU.
And all the other EU countries would rejoice!
Funny thing is, if Turkey joining EU wasn't a maybe-thing that might happen, it might've been a no to Brexit. Turkey's potential membership was one of the major counterpoints to the EU.

Just realised I don't know shit about Turkey except that we had a brawl with them on Gallipoli a hundred years ago Can I get a quick run down of the country and why they're not good

He dont give a fuck about eu i dont know why he actually wants some kind of referendum for joining what a joke.
They were never going to get in anyway especially after that shit they pulled with the migrants.
you know that is a joke right
That is my point. The headline was a joke because of SH.
Yes! Do it burn that bridge
But Nigel said Turkey was just about to join?
Does it even matter? Isnt turkey a dictatorship nowadays?
But Nigel said Turkey was just about to join?
Nigel has said a lot of things.
Turkey was nowhere close to joining the EU. Opening chapters to move them closer to joining was just a diplomatic tool for the EU. For example they encouraged them to take more refugees in exchange for maybe eventually opening more chapters. Their joining was not going to happen anytime soon and saying otherwise is just straight up lying.
If Turkey joined the EU, I'd support Brexit for every other member.
Funny thing is, if Turkey joining EU wasn't a maybe-thing that might happen, it might've been a no to Brexit. Turkey's potential membership was one of the major counterpoints to the EU.
Not a real point for anyone that did even a slight amount of research though. Turkey has been trying to join for decades and completed 1 out of 36 parts. Now they are going full dictator so yeah. Wasn't going to happen.

I don't mind a pre-Erdogan Turkey in the EU, but with Erdogan at the helm, I'd rather they stay away. Erdogan is a backwards piece of shit
No one except for Turkey wants Turkey to join the EU. Since Turkey is trying to blackmail the EU with the refugee crisis, in my opinion they should be permanently disallowed to even apply for EU membership.
Since Turkey is trying to blackmail the EU with the refugee crisis, in my opinion they should be permanently disallowed to even apply for EU membership.
That they aren't already barred due to denial of a genocide and ongoing illegal occupation of a EU member country kind of blows my mind.
It is the year 3560: A race of robot giraffes are the ruling elite, everyone moved to colonies on saturn's rings, a synthetic disease wiped out all black people and Turkey is still an EU candidate.
Funny thing is, if Turkey joining EU wasn't a maybe-thing that might happen, it might've been a no to Brexit. Turkey's potential membership was one of the major counterpoints to the EU.
I don't understand how anyone could even imagine that Turkey was liable to join without absolutely massive changes happening first. Starting with admission of the Genocide. Turkey has been a "potential" joinee for decades. Never got any further.

As long as UKIP and crew could perpetuate the lie long enough for folks to vote, that's all that mattered.
