Great to see they're finally commercializing FTTP On Demand, should make business deployments a fuckload easier
Does this mean FTTP for more homes? Or just business? I don't really understand
Does this mean FTTP for more homes? Or just business? I don't really understand
Well they mention businesses and then start talking about 2/3 of the country, so let's hope both, but I can see them putting more concentration on the business side. Our town has FTTC scheduled for next month and I really hope they keep on schedule, I'm really looking forward to it
and now i wait for virgin to roll out even faster broadband than this.
Not when BT hog the fibre and brag that they are 3 times faster then sky(which runs on their lines)
and now i wait for virgin to roll out even faster broadband than this.
Yeah, i'm loving this broadband battle between virgin and BT. No doubt virgin will retaliate.
See, This is why I love having the telecoms company being private. I really want to what will happen now with the battle for the best offer.
However this does mean one side is going to oversell.
Probably won't come to my area for another 4 years since i live in what used to be a mining town with scum bags littering the street everywhere.

Clarification time: This is BT offering to run a direct fibre straight to the premises if you pay for it (we're talking £500-1000 here, on top of your contract) with full-blown fibre speeds. It's not a replacement for the standard FTTP rollout, it's simply another option for businesses that need a direct fibre hookup but can't wait for it / want 1/1 contention.
I have seen BT infinity vans everywhere, they're really stepping up the fibre

Don't give up all hope, I'm living in a fairly crappy old mining town in the north east, and surprisingly BT rolled out fibre in the area a few months ago.
Seems BT and Virgin are really kicking into gear now.

Same here, I live in a tiny mining town in Northern Ireland and few months ago we got fibre! In fact I'm going to order a BT-infinity package next week.
Still stuck on a 200KB/s line.. :suicide:

We need to pay 3600 € to get fibre into our house :v:
The cables are 2 meters way, sticking out of the fucking ground.
MEAN

Competition for customers does wonders, eh?

Hey I'm from a crappy old mining town in the North East too! Where abouts?
I'm living in Jesmond now, Newcastle city centre. Just had FTTC installed yesterday.

The engineer that came yesterday told us that in Spring, everyone currently on 40mb fibreoptics will start getting 80mb instead.
I think 37.2mb is a pretty good speed and an acceptable loss for the last leg of copper between the cabinet and my house rather than paying an extra few thousand pounds just for 3mbits more.

I also live in an ex-mining town with scumbags littering the street everywhere.

ITT we all live in crappy mining towns.

The down rate is fine, but the up rate really fucking sucks.
This was a server... an hour away?

Yeah, how about BT sort this out instead of giving people with already fast internet faster internet?
YES LOVING IT! Nice to see my bt line is still only 2MEG MAX!

200kb/s dl speeds suck...

Virgin media master race.
They've even installed fiber optics in my area but unfortunately are still asking for a shit load of monies :(

There isnt a great deal they can do about it. People that are on copper cables and are a good distance from their exchange will get poor speeds no matter what, switching to FTTC would give them pretty much the max speed the connection offers still.
Its about time they start rolling fibreoptics out to everyone, I remember a few years ago it felt like we were gonna have to wait forever for it and Virgin were only doing trials in certain areas. This is a good step towards improving our infrastructure.

Yep would be nice if they would just lay down fibre optics everywhere.
Also if they're installing a whole bunch of fiber wire, shouldn't prices be getting cheaper? I mean like.. come on, not all of us can afford what is it? 80$/ month?

I pay £40/month for 40mbit, which is $63 CAD. The actual broadband package is something stupid like £15, but you have to have a phone plan with it. If I had my way then I wouldn't have a landline phone, I'm on contract with my mobile anyway and get 30 hours free a month.
Still, I probably won't get it because of BT's habit of throttling connections at peak time. Unless they've changed.

I dont know about that, I have been on Total Broadband for 4 months and never noticed my connection being throttled at peak times, and I download a lot.

Well they probably have then, just that I used to have BT years ago before switching over to O2 and I used to get throttled to shit.
