(CNN)Thousands sought refuge in temporary shelters in South Africa after mobs with machetes attacked immigrants in Durban, leaving at least five people dead, an aid group said Thursday. Heavily armed police have scrambled to stop clashes this week after local residents accused immigrants from other African nations of taking their jobs. The attacks in Durban killed two immigrants and three South Africans, including a 14-year-old boy, authorities said. "There has been an outpouring of support from ordinary South Africans who are disgusted with the attacks not only because they are foreign, or African, but because they are fellow human beings," said Gift of the Givers charity, which is helping those seeking refuge. "We are preparing aid packages for those who may journey onwards to their home countries." The charity said about 8,500 people fled to refugee centers or police stations this week because of the violence. That doesn't count anyone who fled their homes to other, private accommodations, the group said. It said it hopes the violence is limited to Durban, but assured immigrants that it has a facility in Johannesburg to help those who might need shelter there. "We have tents and all essential supplies on standby but pray that sanity prevails and this does not become necessary," it said.
http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/16/africa/south-africa-anti-foreigner-attacks/ Meanwhile, asshole Jacob Zuma sits in his office tapping his thumbs together pretending to do shit
Every time a kid dies to something as horrific and stupid as this, my stomach turns inside out.
ANC will pretend they're doing something, subsequently do nothing, then the cycle will renew itself, probably. [editline]17th April 2015[/editline] South Africa's fucked if it continues on this path, and it's very likely it will. The roads are literally being torn apart by trucks while the money appointed for their repair is used for the next ANC member's mercedes benz or home, businesses are shrinking or disappearing altogether due to the sheer crime and unworkable bureaucracy, now we've got the idiotic Zulu king calling for reprisals against foreign Africans - and what a surprise, people pick up machetes and then he acts like he never said it in the first place. The ANC's response? They ignore the violence, instead they focus on the real problem here - that people shouldn't call the attacks 'xenophobic', rather 'afrophobic'.
ANC is doing something, they're making a hashtag campagin because in this day and age it has to work [t]https://scontent-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtp1/v/t1.0-9/11124704_797600176961032_1376961357801343646_n.jpg?oh=9a7fd104006abc87ec09205c90fe9481&oe=55A58DAF[/t]
The attacks have spread north to Johannesburg too. Only a matter of time before it arrives here in Cape Town :/ Sources: http://ewn.co.za/2015/04/17/Overnight-xenophobic-violence-in-Johannesburg http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32347305
The depressing thing about South Africa is that in many ways it's starting to resemble Zimbabwe. The entire electrical grid is on the verge of collapse.
Seems like right now immigrants aren't welcomed anywhere Also we keep making more refugees than ever
The depressing thing about South Africa is that in many ways it's starting to resemble Zimbabwe. The entire electrical grid is on the verge of collapse.
ANC is purely to blame, they sit around and do nothing but spend all income on bullshit Zuma's presidental house is worth fucking billions, hard earned tax payer dollars went into his comfort while millions of displaced South Africans are either dying or trying to make it through day by day looking for employment or trying to not get killed All we can hope for is that next election, the Democratic Alliance wins and sweeps up the ANC's mess. But ANC still has a lot of ground because they always love to boast that they were the politcal party of Mandela, but they never like to say that they've tossed a lot of Mendela's ideas like striving for a better nation out the window

I have dual citizenship, not that it would matter to many mob people if they found out.
I hope it doesn't. I'm guessing you're from the cape?
Yes :/ Fortunately in quite a reserved area, so should be clear of it. My trip to work will be fun though... How do the south africans identify the immigrants? Is it by language, visual etc.. or are they just killing random people because they look like immigrants?
How do the south africans identify the immigrants? A lot of foreigners, for example the Shona don't often speak Zulu as well / at all - and they're from relatively nearby. They're also probably identified because they're known in the community. Nigerians, for example, tend to wear different clothing, run specific shops, etc., and only now are there reprisals against them because people are being stirred up. [editline]18th April 2015[/editline] An article from Zimbabwe about this. The comments section is pretty interesting. If you don't know much about Zimbabwe / SA's history it's probably a bit too much, but it's pretty interesting seeing the perspective of the groups who are both perpetrating this violence and being targeted by it.
South Africa's screwed in a few ways, but one big thing is the "brain drain". When the ANC started ruining the country, all the people with high levels of education and professional qualifications moved overseas, my family included, leaving the country with a huge skills shortage. Now areas must "share power" on the grid, so some areas won't have electricity for a few random hours of the day. Crime and corruption has gone through the roof, the currency is collapsing. It's just another Zimbabwe, except with a more gradual effect.
It's just another Zimbabwe, except with a more gradual effect.
Actually it's taken the same time I think. Zimbabwe didn't really start to fall to shit until about 20 years after the end of Rhodesia. It's been about 20 years since the end of Apartheid, so it's starting to kick in about now. It's probably going to end up like Zimbabwe is now in about 10 years.

Then of course there's still unresolved issues over the currency, land reform, etc.
