http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/health-31310685
Drivers in England will be banned from smoking in their cars if they are carrying children as passengers. The move, which will become law on 1 October, follows a similar ban in Wales and aims to protect young people under 18 from second-hand smoke. Scotland is also considering introducing a ban. Anyone found flouting the law in England could be fined £50.
"Sorry Timmy, you gotta walk to school from now on, you know mommy needs her cigarettes"
US has something similar but its never enforced
When are they going to learn that this is nigh unenforceable?
Good, beside the point of second hand smoke being very harmful to passengers it also makes your car reak even with the windows down It sticks to the fabrics and stuff
I dunno, my mom smoked when she was driving with me all the time, and I'm fine.
I dunno, my mom smoked when she was driving with me all the time, and I'm fine.
I don't know man, one of my best friends back in elementary school has serious breathing problems from his adoptive mom smoking like an entire pack inside the car with him. One day he stopped coming to school, I heard a teacher saying the school called CPS on his adoptive parents and i've never seen him since :(
I dunno, my mom smoked when she was driving with me all the time, and I'm fine.
"I went through x and I'm fine" posts are the worst.
I dunno, my mom smoked when she was driving with me all the time, and I'm fine.
this poster is already dead from second hand smoke lung cancer
When are they going to learn that this is nigh unenforceable?
That's not the point of laws. No law ever has been completely enforceable. The law acts as a deterrent and sets a societal standard. The opposite of this law being implemented would effectively be the government telling society 'don't worry! Smoking while your kids are in your car with you is okay!'
That's not the point of laws.
There is no point to a law that's unenforceable.
No law ever has been completely enforceable.
One or two odd successfully prosecuted cases a year out of something this commonly done does not make a law enforceable.
The law acts as a deterrent
No, it doesn't. Prohibition doesn't work. I don't care what drug you're talking about. Nicotine, Alcohol, weed, whatever. Prohibition just does not work, it is unenforceable and untenable. We're not exactly gonna see the next Al Capone spring up out of the smoking bans, but just the same it's not going anywhere.
and sets a societal standard.
Of nannystate politics and feel-good legislation, sure. You really think a law like this is going to make smokers not light up when the kids in the car? It won't.
I dunno, my mom smoked when she was driving with me all the time, and I'm fine.
Happened to me too, but my mom was at-least respectable (as respectable as smoking in a car with your kid can be, anyway) about it. She'd just like, roll down the window and always ask me, "Can I smoke in here?" Always said yes, partly because I didn't like saying no to people and partly because I didn't know how bad it was for me. I was a fat little fucker too, staying indoors and eating ice cream while my mom smoked near me wasn't too unusual. Honestly surprised I lived past childhood. That being said, I'm glad that it's outlawed now. Kid's lungs shouldn't have to go through that.
This is good. My mom used to smoke in the car when I was growing up. She still does occasionally, but back then it was pretty much every time we were in the car. She would keep the window down but the smell was still super strong, I can't believe I never complained because I find the smell utterly intolerable now that I'm an adult. Who knows how much of that shit I took into my lungs.
When are they going to learn that this is nigh unenforceable?
It's a nice gesture regardless.
Good on ya's! We did away with this years ago. $250 on-the-spot fine applies to the driver and any passenger who breaks the law here in NSW.
This is a good thing. I am a smoker, but I hate it when people smoke around children. I purposefully avoid them.
We had this for a few years, hefty fine like Bradyns said. Enjoy that law cause I've always hated smoking, never have never will. Was utter shit to be a young kid in a car coughing on that shit. Parents had already quit and we were already past the age cap when it was passed, but it's still a good thing.
This is a good thing. I am a smoker, but I hate it when people smoke around children. I purposefully avoid them.
Yeah a lot of times i'll hold my breath if a kid walks past or move if i feel like i'm bothering kids.
It's surprising that this has been legal for so long when it's verboten in most of the EU. Probably not going to be really effective though, like that ban on mobiles while driving.
Now that I think of it, my dad's a heavy smoker but he NEVER smokes around other people who don't smoke. Not inside cars or even outdoors. He takes distance to everyone and asks other smokers to come with him. Thanks dad! Now stop smoking completely please.
but it's legal to smoke if you're 16 in the UK (just not legal to purchase until you're 18) what if you're 16 and in a car with an 18 year old friend and they smoke and are caught, are they fined?
Though, with the kids I've seen, it's probably THEM smoking in the cars instead of the parents.
When are they going to learn that this is nigh unenforceable?
A police, with or without uniform, sees a guy smoking in a car with his kid in the back seat and fines the driver. It's about as enforcable as laws against driving fast, but that doesn't mean we should allow people driving on shitty curvy roads with bad sight at 120 km/h.
When are they going to learn that this is nigh unenforceable?
That's besides the point. If it even stops one parent from smoking with their children in the car, this law is a success.
second hand smoke doesn't exist *takes shot of inhaler*
There is no point to a law that's unenforceable. One or two odd successfully prosecuted cases a year out of something this commonly done does not make a law enforceable.
British police confirmed to have no eyes. Law is unenforceable people, pack it up. Probably said the same thing about the seatbelt laws too
the law only applies up to 16 year olds.
Says 18 in the article though
FINALLY, starting to get pissed off from smokers.
Ironic that this is under the steam category
