The eurozone will gain an extra member at midnight on Tuesday asLatvia becomes the 18th country to join the single currency union, despite little obvious public enthusiasm for the move. Latvia's arrival gives eurocrats in Brussels an extra reason to toast in the new year. Eighteen months after the threat of Greece quitting the eurogripped financial markets, the eurozone is marking its 15th anniversary by expanding, not fracturing. With final preparations completed, outgoing prime minister Valdis Dombrovskis will ceremonially withdraw the first euro note from an ATM shortly after midnight.

I for one welcome our Baltic neighbors in the Union.
You're losing, Russia.
You're losing, Russia.
I hope I get to see the day when Russia becomes democratic and joins the EU.

Germany was quoted as saying "Oh what are you going to do, bleed on me!?"

The European Union is easily our best chance at world peace.
I'm not even joking.

There are other political/currency unions coming too such as the USAN, SICA, GAFTA, ASEAN etc.
The future will be full of continental unions

And that's not a good thing at all.
"You should join OUR union, because it's better"
"No, you should join OUR union, because it's way way better"
"Lets kill eachother"

Until we hit space and form world parliaments.

Which is increasingly impractical and pointless as the world becomes more interconnected and interdependent. We live in an age of globalisation, after all.
Until we hit space and form world parliaments.
I can see a world union in a couple hundred years or so, it's inevitable.
You're losing, Russia.
Latvia doesn't matter, Russia just won Ukraine and Belarus.

Come on, we all know what it's going to end up as.

God damn Liberia thinks they own the world as usual
I can't find my euro coins help
Also, a taxi driver tried to scam someone by saying that he has to pay in lats, even though you have to use euros now.
Welcome Latvia ! Have fun.
joke about potatoes and latvia being able to get a decent supply of potatoes and happiness now it's joined the EU
[editline]1st January 2014[/editline]
is there an explanation for the colour scheme in the article map?
[editline]1st January 2014[/editline]

Similar too the beginning of the 20th century. Nothing could ever go wrong! :v:

You have to use euros in taxis and public transport but you can still use Lats in shops, etc till 15th or so.
Welp.
Grats us i guess? Time will show.
Time to change my/buy stuff with my remaining lats.

That makes absolutely no sense, because we're talking about regional/continental unions. The European Union wouldn't be telling the United States that it should join the EU and not some hypothetical American Union, simply because the United States is not European.
Which is increasingly impractical and pointless as the world becomes more interconnected and interdependent. We live in an age of globalisation, after all.
What I'd really like to see is figures showing how interconnected the UK and Germany were just prior to WW1 + 2. I've heard, without seeing numbers, that it was considerable....

If you look at it one way it has very nicely kept nearly all of Europe (not a continent known for extreme peace) friendly with each other and not murdering each other. It should win a nobel peace price.

Didn't it win one like last year or something?
Didn't it win one like last year or something?
Shit, it might have. Perhaps this is where I got the idea from.
TO GOOGLE etc.
Edit: 2012, well deserved in my opinion then.
There are other political/currency unions coming too such as the USAN, SICA, GAFTA, ASEAN etc.

Hopefully not Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia.
The European Union is easily our best chance at world peace.

I think what we have going on, even without the EU is our best bet at world peace, if france say declared war on the UK, their economy would pretty much collapse in an instant as everyone else tells them to fuck off.
I hope I get to see the day when Russia becomes democratic and joins the EU.
Then EU becomes greater Russia
They are very influental
