• Should I buy a GTX 980 Ti or a 1080 to replace my dead 780?

So yeah, my 780 shat itself (artifacting, blue lines, fucked resolution) and I want to know which one would be the best value and future proof purchase? Is the ridiculous price jump to the 1080 worth it (I live in Australia so it's worse) or should I save a couple hundred? Which brand should I go? Also, should I concerned that my 780 died after about 2 years and 9 months, or is that an acceptable life-span? Fanks. Edit: Lol I completely forgot the 1070, I'm considering that one as well.
1080 would be the better future proof purchase. But if you're concerned about price you could go for the 1070.
1070 will last you a long time if you game at 1080p, if you use a higher resolution than that you should consider the 1080.
Yeah should have specified that. I do game at 1080p. Hypothetically, is the 1080 meant to handle 4K and/or 1440p comfortably?
The 1080 is enough for 4k, but you cant max the settings. The 1070 handles 1440p perfectly right now, but you probably wont be able to max out future game.
a 970 can max some olderish games at 4k. a 1080 should easily be able to max most, if not all games, even witcher 3
I would get a 1070, at 1080p the 1080 simply isn't worth it. Maybe if you're on a high-refresh rate GSync monitor, but yeah even then I'd consider the 1070 a much better choice. The 1080 also isn't quite there with 4K (and it will there even less at the time where you may choose to upgrade), so personally I'd rather save that money for a 4K monitor plus the eventual GPU upgrade that can handle it.
Where did you get your card from? if it's evga and you turn it in on warrenty you might get a 980 since they might be out of stock in your model. I just sent in my 760 and got back a 960 from them.

Most cards should have like a 5 year or at least cover stuff that isn't your fault. Don't know if you can RMA it but its worth a shot. If it's not worth it to ship it in your opinion, try the baking method. It resolders all the little connections in there. I saved an 8800gt where the monitor connections wouldn't work and like you said there was artifacting, by doing that. I got one more year out of it before buying a 460 haha. Just make sure the card really is shit before you try it and try not to melt it all the way. If you can wait a bit, maybe the 900 series cards will drop in price and you can do 2 980's or whatever. Personally once my 770sc isn't useful anymore ill probably spring for 2 980's or 2 1070's.
How's your monitor refresh rate? Is it 120/144hz? If not go for the 1070, the 1080 is ridiculously overkill for games that are only going to run at 1080p 60 fps.
I don't understand this logic. I'll admit I'm really uninformed when it comes to graphics cards and the like, but if you were prepared to buy a 980ti, which is (theoretically) the same price as a 1080, why wouldn't you buy a 1080 over a 1070? It's "overkill" now, sure, but that just means better performance in the future when games do start to utilize that power. I mean yeah, you could save money now, but if you were fully willing to make that purchase to begin with it seems like it would save time and effort to just get the better card now.
The 980 ti and 1080 are not the same price. The gap between the cheapest 980 Ti and the cheapest 1080 is over $200. And that's in the US, OP is in Australia though so I'm certain the prices are even worse for him.
$639 vs $1029

Maybe the fact I went Palit has something to do with my card failure lol.
First I would check and see if your 780 is still under warranty. Like I said above, it seems out of warranty.
How's your monitor refresh rate? Is it 120/144hz? It seems like the 1070 would still be the most efficient option for even a higher refresh rate though, considering the 'ifs' and 'maybes' involved if I were to get a 1080. Right now I just need a replacement card :) Really appreciating the help guys.
A 1070 crushes (as in, 60+ FPS constantly) even more demanding games such as Witcher 3 with everything set as high as possible in 1080p
Get a 1070 instead of a 980ti, it's 200 less dollars at worst
1070 any day
