The family of a northern Indiana restaurant owner who ICE detained during a routine check-in in February says he’s scheduled for deportation Friday. Roberto Beristain is the owner of a popular restaurant in Granger called Eddie’s Steak Shed. His family says he came to the United States from Mexico City illegally in 1998. He later obtained documentation to work in the country and checked in with ICE each year. It was during one of those check ins last month that ICE took Beristain into custody because of an incident in 2000. Roberto and his wife, Helen, were visiting Niagara Falls that year and accidentally crossed into Canada. Officers there detained Roberto when they realized he was in the U.S. illegally. Helen says a lawyer helped get Roberto out on bail, but he was told he had to voluntarily leave the country within a month. Roberto decided not to self deport because Helen was pregnant at the time. An ICE spokesperson says when Roberto failed to deport himself, his voluntary order revered to a final order of removal, meaning ICE could detain him. They didn’t act on that order for more than a decade.

“[Trump] did say the good people would not be deported, the good people would be checked,” Helen said.
http://indianapublicmedia.org/news/indiana-restaurant-owner-deported-friday-116463/ I feel sorry for the dude in question, seems like a half decent individual. His wife is pretty fucking stupid though, this is what you wanted and now you're getting it.
During an interview earlier this month, Helen said she voted for President Donald Trump because she supports his immigration policies. She said criminals should be deported, but she didn’t think her husband would face that fate.
"I never thought ICE would deport MY illegal immigrant," says woman who voted for the Deport Illegal Immigrants Party
play stupid games, win stupid prizes
"I never thought ICE would deport MY illegal immigrant," says woman who voted for the Deport Illegal Immigrants Party
Just tells you how thorough the GOP's misinformation campaign was.
Amazing how poorly informed people like her can be. She literally voted to have her husband kicked out of the country and is still surprised that it's happening.
load gun, shoot foot.
I thought people got a residency permit if they married a US citizen
I can't even find mirth in this. This is just tragic and just goes to show how little of a fuck your government gives about the little guy. I am so sorry for your country. [editline]24th March 2017[/editline] I'm amazed there are still people with faith in the regime when there's such patent evidence they want to drive an even wider wedge.
I thought people got a residency permit if they married a US citizen
Oh if only it was that easy. I'm going through the process at the moment to move to be with my fiance and it's insanely hard, expensive and takes time to get a visa to move to the US, like most other countries. Even getting married you still have to go through the process and it's not legal for a foreigner to get married in the USA to a US citizen without the proper visa.
I thought people got a residency permit if they married a US citizen
Probably neglected to apply for it, which if so is his own fault.
I thought people got a residency permit if they married a US citizen
no, you get fast-laned for it though
It will never cease to amaze me that people put any amount of trust into the things Donald Trump says.
I thought people got a residency permit if they married a US citizen
as someone currently going through that process: no and they intentionally make the process to actually get residency through marriage as hard and as expensive as possible.
You reap what you sow.
How do you own a business if your not actually a citizen of that country? And that's just a long line of questions like even marriage.
An ICE spokesperson says when Roberto failed to deport himself, his voluntary order revered to a final order of removal, meaning ICE could detain him. They didn’t act on that order for more than a decade.
So a decade old order is now Trump's fault?
So a decade old order is now Trump's fault?
You're an idiot if you think he would've been deported under literally any other president. ICE has been ignoring most of these cases because it's clearly ridiculous what they're doing, destroying families and ruining lives. It clearly says they've failed to deport him for over a decade, do you really think that was caused by a backup of paperwork? It's delusional to think Trump's administration isn't the one that set this in motion.
that leopard tweet is more relevant every single day
How do you own a business if your not actually a citizen of that country? And that's just a long line of questions like even marriage.
Do you need to be a citizen to own a business? What about all the foreign businesses?
This reminds me of a guy I know. He's Spanish/Mexican and a conservative Catholic and is getting married to a white woman, but unironically supports Trump because "abortion is murder guyz". I don't know how it never crossed his mind, that some of his fellow Trumpets would lynch him if they knew he was "desecrating da wite women". There are too many people in this country who support the Republicans despite all reasonable evidence showing that Trump and his gang go against these people's best interests. America is a country mostly populated by lemmings.
What do you think was going through her head as she found out? Do you think this was playing?
Do you need to be a citizen to own a business? What about all the foreign businesses?
Because they apply for tax file numbers with all the approach documents? It's a little hard to do that without the documents. I don't know how the US system works with exception to the Tax system but in terms of owning a business here it's pretty strict.
America is a country mostly populated by lemmings.
It's the living embodiment of Socrates' warning against birthright democracy. Like this woman for example. This fucking idiot does not need to be allowed anywhere near a voting booth or empowered to feel like she should be politically-active. How can anybody lack this much common sense and not fall over dead from it? It's not like it was ever a secret. She knew exactly what she was voting for and who she was supporting, yet she never stopped to think, "Gee, maybe this isn't a good idea?" Did she want her husband to be detained and deported or something lol?

This allows them file their taxes legally regardless of how they got here.
Granger, IN is surrounded by several urban centers. Granger itself is over 90% white, with few people below the poverty line. A nearby urban area is a university town that's only ~60% white, with a poverty level of about 11%. Granger is basically a textbook case of the Halo Effect when it comes to anti-foreigner sentiment. NYT put out another article describing a similar case in Germany. Granger is probably just close enough to recognize that the 'other' is nearby to perceive them as a threat, but not close enough to have the sort of normal, friendly, human interactions with people to make people realize they aren't under attack. That would explain the overall public sentiment in the area, but not this woman's idiocy.
An ICE spokesperson says when Roberto failed to deport himself, his voluntary order revered to a final order of removal, meaning ICE could detain him. They didn’t act on that order for more than a decade.
2 questions come to my mind: 1. Why did Roberto not set a goal to relocate himself and his family but instead kept residing illegaly for a decade knowing he could be deported when caught? 2. Why did ICE wait for a decade to act even though they most likely knew where Roberto was residing? There's more to this story than Trump drama.

There's more to this story than Trump drama.
Was not "caught", Roberto had been checking in with ICE every year despite the active deportation order, he was working towards getting a green card. 1) Roberto's wife and children are american, he owns a business in america, why would he move? 2) Until Trump, ICE had been following a policy of not pursuing useful and productive members of society. This is all about Trump.
"Ay chico votemos a Trump because all those lazy and criminal illegal immigrants should be kicked out right dear?" "Ummm sure but shouldn't we first check out what Trump is actually saying about illegals?" "Oh what for, if he is strictly clear on who's going to get deported! You are a bueno!" *2 months later* "¿¡ayyyy por que you taking my husband you said it was going to be the malos ilegales!?" Honestly, I just...I just can't think how this woman formed a chain of arguments that ended up in "We should trust Trump and my husband won't be deported". Add her to a list of potential candidates for cognitive behaviour tests.
In case anyone isn't aware, there's an entire tumblr dedicated to cataloging Trump voters publicly broadcasting their buyer's remorse once they see what the cheeto they elected is actually doing with the job they gave him. [t]https://68.media.tumblr.com/f92c523c3d277e48c7f1132801570d21/tumblr_omztiwvNvW1w1aom0o3_1280.png[/t] So many people upset that their face has been eaten after voting for the Eating Faces Party. There are even some sad stories of a Trump voter fearing that their illegal-immigrant S.O. is going to be deported despite them voting for the man who vowed to do exactly that, just like this thread OP's situation.
