Total War Warhammer is racking in the reviews and scoring high compared to Rome II
Total War: Warhammer is brimming with exciting ideas, interesting characters, and outright, skull-stompingly delightful units and faction mechanics. The current roster of starting positions in the campaign feels thin, but each army therein is a distinctly different experience. Some factions (Vampire Counts, Greenskins) are more fun than others (Dwarfs), but none feel underdeveloped or unfinished. Deep hero progression and a well-executed Chaos invasion round out a campaign that, while it has some flaws in set-up and pacing, fulfilled all of my deepest fantasies of seeing giant, impossible armies clashing amidst the shrieking of griffins and the glow of flaming meteors summoned from the sky. It’s just a damn good time. - IGN
Good, hopefully this convinces Creative Assembly to branch out a little with Total War and try non-historical settings.

Considering they split their team to work on an unannounced historical title in tandem with this game, I think we may see total war go in two directions from this point on.
Hopefully that isn't a bad thing in terms of quality though.
Just be ready for bugs, boys. We all remember Rome 2's glitchy nonsense.

A valid fear, but somehow I doubt that the reviewers somehow got a magically glitch free game. I hope this launches better
When Rome 2 was originally reviewed, people checked the steam achievements for the reviewers and found that only a third of them had even played it for one hour and that half of them didn't even bother with a single battle

Wow, really?
Have you got a link for that news? Sounds like a great accounting tool. Like, sering how much time the reviewers have played the game.

I'm willing to believe that CA is going to have a better release this time around considering the terrible fallout of Rome 2.
I'm not saying it won't be riddled with bugs because that is what we've all come to expect with CA, but Rome 2 was literally unplayable on release so the bar is set pretty low for a better release.
Still not buying it over that bullshit about Chaos being a stupid preorder bonus, I'll buy it when its £3 in a sale with all the extra bits.

You can also get them for free a week after the game has launched. Also is this *really* an issue when consumers have a platfotm with an accessable and robust refund system?
At least they're offering the Chaos pack if you purchase it within the first week.
There were plenty of sites out there that are selling pre-orders for $42~45 USD if you used certain promo codes. Seeing the price trend of Attila, you would have to wait about a year for it go to down that much as a regular price.

This is an unique bonus. That way people who refuse to preorder can still get it the week it comes out and still get a chance to get Chaos once players get their fill of the game and they like it. I think devs should try this more often.
I watched Heir of Carthage's review (he said he played about 25 hours of a Dwarfs campaign) and overall he was really enjoying it.
Yeah with how many bugs there were post patches in Rome II and how absolute shit melee combat is in this engine AND chaos being day 1 dlc I think I'll pass even though I've played every total war besides Shogun 1 and atilla and I love warhammer

But the Chaos aren't day 1 DLC anymore.
Probably need to get over the pre-order/1st week dlc, at this point you not buying it won't influence them and you might aswell grab it through discount codes while you can.
I hope the success of this game leads to us getting a 40k Total War.

Fuck dawn if war 2 chaos is a CORE faction and they hid it behind a paywall? Smfh
Livestreaming of the game on the Official Twitch:

Surrealbeliefs has a couple of series of him playing as each faction

They also made an entire campaign rather than just a shitty faction pack and didn't arbitrarily lock it off as day one dlc. This game was already content scarce for a total war game with only 5 factions, locking off chaos to try and force people into preordering was just adding insult to injury.
To be honest, in it's current state Rome 2 is probably one of the best games CA have ever released. Sure it was absolutely terrible on launch but all of those problems have been fixed. Rome 2 is certainly better than Atilla which is terrible by comparison because the whole game is filled with lots of needlessly tedious mechanics and feels more like a "don't fuck up" simulator.

Chaos aren't as important of a faction in Warhammer Fantasy as they are in WH40K. By the time of this campaign they are extremely weakened.
That isn't to say they aren't an important faction, but its similar to how you aren't complaining that the Imperial Guard are important but not shipping with Dawn of War.

Melee combat is no longer matched/1v1, it's back to Med2/rome 1 style where 1 unit can get hit by several at once and there's no sync killing either. The cavalry impacts are also much stronger this time around and they added guard mode again.
Also Chaos isn't a pre order bonus anymore.
Now imagine there was a Total War in 40k. Imperial Guard brought to it's true stature

rome 2 is painful and unrewarding to play, it's my least favourite out of all of them and I wish I could have gotten a refund for it
But the Chaos aren't day 1 DLC anymore.
Yes they are. I don't give a shit if it expires a week after release. After a week they become dlc. It's still meant to pressure consumers into an irrational decision.
They're literally chopping up content they had at release to sell separately. That's day 1 dlc.

Yes chaos are a pre order bonus / first week bonus.
All the footage I've seen still shows a lot of animation locking. Especially with larger units vs smaller units.

Which, cool, i accept your viewpoint, but i don't think it has as much merit when the consumer can buy this on day one, literally play the chaos DLC for 2 hours (bearing in mind, its just campaign mode with units that function differently.) refund it if they don't, then buy the product at a later date, for cheaper, and then chose not to buy it.

What if the game has issues on release though? Then you're torn between keeping the game and hoping for patches, or getting a refund but having to buy the DLC if you re-buy the game when it's fixed.

Pretty much, it wasn't just bad because of the bugs it was just overall terribly designed.
