TIM Burton's arresting visual style is well known from movies like Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and Alice In Wonderland - but a new show reveals the full scale of his Gothic vision.
The US filmmaker, partner of quirky British actress Helena Bonham-Carter, was an accomplished artist, and a Disney animator, before moving into directing Hollywood movies.
'This exhibition shows the full range of Tim Burton's extraordinary creativity,' said Britt Salvesen, the exhibition's organiser at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma), which is presenting the show from May 29 to Oct 31.
'Most people have a good sense of his style, but seeing the show demonstrates how persistent his vision is and how evident it was from very early on, before he was even thinking about making full-scale feature films.'
The retrospective bring together more than 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, films and videos, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, costumes and cinematic ephemera.
Lacma said the film retrospective - titled 'The Fantastical Worlds of Tim Burton' - will consist of 15 movies running at the centre's Bing Theater between May 27 to June 28. Doris C. Adams, one of Burton's art teachers when he was young, said: 'He drew everything you can ever imagine, and all those little creatures,' adding that she 'always encouraged him to go ahead ...because he was very talented.'
What's with the picture of crazy homeless people?
fucking mars attacks! that movie freaked me the FUCK out
I remember hearing somewhere that someone once said "We let Tim Burton make movies because we're afraid of what he'd do otherwise".
If it's anything like his early animations this will blow my mind.

that's what I look like in the morning
not sure which one I look more like though
Yeah, it looks like a clown and some homeless guy have been sleeping in a coal mine.
Tim Burton is such a badass.
Some of his stuff I really like, others I'm not a huge fan of. I did respect that he stayed pretty true to the book, more so than the classic 70s Willy Wonka, with Charlie and Chocolate Factory though.
Tim Burton's older stuff was great, but lately all his movies have been awful.
That Alice in Wonderland one was fucking terrible.
...and his artwork kind of sucks.
