• Itunes 10 needs at least OSX 10.5, costumers crying foul
A pricey but stylish MacBook laptop, a variety of iPods and now a wallet-busting iPhone 4 … I've bought them all. So why is Apple now penalising me and thousands of other loyal customers by effectively declaring that our computers are obsolete? If you go out and buy an iPhone 4 or the latest iPod shuffle, iPod nano or iPod touch, you won't be able to use it unless you have the latest version of iTunes (iTunes 10) on your computer. No problem, you think – it's simply a case of downloading it from Apple's website. But I've just made a rather unpleasant discovery: "older" Mac computers are unable to run the latest version of iTunes. And I'm not alone; it's a problem that has sparked fury among Apple users across the world
http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2011/may/21/apple-upgrades-itunes-version (may be an opinion piece but it does describe the issue) So basically, the latest version of Itunes refuses to install if you don't have OSX 10.5 (Leopard) or newer. People are getting pissy about this, saying things like their hardware is being made obsolete, Apple are forcing them to buy new computers, bla bla bla. What I absolutely love about this is the whole 'hardware being obsolete' shouting. If there's one industry that moves faster than a TGV on crack, it's the computer industry. Your hardware is almost outdated when you buy it! What amuses me most is that not only are these people whining about having to upgrade their OS by paying for it (You bought a bloody Mac and you're complaining about paying a relatively measly 80 quid to upgrade your OS 4 years later?) but immediately they're crying foul about how Apple is 'abandoning their loyal userbase' and how it's an evil plot about forcing them to buy new computers.
Why am I not surprised?

yeah i could imagine that would be quite annoying but that's just apple, you should know what the deal is when you get one
Oh wow, that isn't unpredictable for Apple but it's still surprisingly horrible. And people claim Microsoft is greedy.
Oh wow, that isn't unpredictable for Apple but it's still surprisingly horrible. And people claim Microsoft is greedy.
ahem, DX10
Almost all computer/electronic devices have "Built in obsolescence" now a days.
itunes is shit compared to beatport anyway
ahem, DX10
DX10 is, as far as I know, reliant on certain Hardware and Software requirements. DX10 is also free. Itunes 10 is a service which sells you music and videos, and therefore should be more catered towards making it easier for potential customers to access it. DX10 is also not placed onto all Microsoft products making you utterly dependent on it.

[editline]22nd May 2011[/editline] in fact microsoft was notorious during the 90's for their abusive business practices of buying out shit at rapid levels and locking out the competition.
Apple sure is greedy.
probably the thing that i dislike about apple's computers the most is their inconsistency take the old powermac which had a really awesome easy to take apart and service case with all the parts beautifully unfolding when you open it so how come it's fucking hell to do that with their other computers!
Because there were so many games that were entirely dependent on you having DX10 during the time of Vista. Also DX10 being software for rendering while iTunes is an online market place makes no difference at all.
right but the fact that most dx10 features also work on xp yet is locked out from it means nothing i guess i don't know
Most does not mean =
So does this mean windows users can't use itunes 10?

[editline]22nd May 2011[/editline]
So does this mean windows users can't use itunes 10?
using it right now so nope :geno:
i'm just saying saying that it's somehow wrong to say microsoft is greedy is a very silly thing to say considering that's what microsoft became synonymous with remember micro$oft?
There is a difference between people requiring a certain OS to run a program to render graphics and people requiring a certain OS to purchase materials from the same company selling them the OS which also forces them to use that program on all their products.
What the fuck is up with Apple lately I didn't know corporations could have periods
I'm getting more functionality out of Apple software than people who actually have OSX? That's just hilarious.
There is a difference between people requiring a certain OS to run a program to render graphics and people requiring a certain OS to purchase materials from the same company selling them the OS which also forces them to use that program.
yeah but not really since you don't really need that certain os to render those graphics anyway getting lost in the details there
Leopard is two releases behind the current one and came out 4 years ago, why is anyone surprised that new software requires at least it? As for it not working on old hardware, Leopard works on anything newer than a G4, which were included in things back as far as 1999. Perhaps if you are still using something this old you shouldn't be buying the latest gadgets and should consider upgrading the computer.
yeah but not really since you don't really need that certain os to render those graphics anyway getting lost in the details there
One is a self sustaining monopoly and the other is the limitations of an OS to render graphics.
One is a self sustaining monopoly and the other is the limitations of an OS to render graphics.
now you are playing very coy, apple couldn't be considered a monopoly in any sense of the word except with the ipod before because it cashed in quickly microsoft is the one that's had a lock on OS's for a very long time and was even busted by an anti-trust suit
You don't have to buy a new computer as long as you have an Intel Mac. Just buy the updated OS, jeez people. [editline]22nd May 2011[/editline] Oh right, 10.5 works on PPC too. [editline]22nd May 2011[/editline]
One is a self sustaining monopoly and the other is the limitations of an OS to render graphics.
OpenGL 4 works on Windows XP which uses the same technology as DirectX 11. DX11 could easily work on Windows XP but Microsoft is grasping at straws to get people to update.
why the fuck would you still be running Tiger?
A pricey but stylish MacBook laptop
i'm having a hard time believing that people who have a MacBook(debuted in 2006) and don't have OSX 10.5 are anywhere near a sizable demographic
For a second I thought they meant that you couldn't get iTunes on windows anymore
Didn't iTunes 10 come out in September, why is this a problem now?
From what I understand DX10 was almost a total rewrite of Direct X. I wouldn't expect them to waste the man power to add it to an already obsolete OS. It would also of caused a nightmare of compatibility issues with older games. Better for everyone they just got it over with and discontinued support. I don't really understand the problem here as long as iTunes users can still use the older version of iTunes. Support has to be dropped for an outdated OS eventually.
....Fucking bullshit.
