looking a lot more tempting now, although I still don't intend to get 1st gen VR when I don't even have the hardware to run it
The Rift is a fantastic product; when it works. Errors are nothing but user friendly, even simple stuff such as the HMD being outside of the trackable area are reported as absurd number code errors with absolutely NO clear explanation in documentation. Such as -18603 and the likes. Put the saved cash into extra sensors if you wish to do a full room scale experience. I've gotten away with 2 sensors with only a few occlusion issues. (Specifically for games like Onward) If you are on the edge of buying a rift or vive, either try one first OR wait until second gen. I'd say first gen is somewhat rough around the edges. I have I high hopes for the second gen vive being the gold standard, combine the rifts superiors ergonomics with the vives tracking and you got a seriously good VR Headset. If you are into flight sims, go for a rift. It is superior for simulation purposes being able to read almost everything inside and A10C cockpit without having to move from my standard upright position, while on a vive it looks like visual garbage in comparison for when reading dials and text on TCUs.
neat, time to get the touch
If you are into flight sims, go for a rift.
do you use xplane? or microsoft i swear i saw a video of the xplane creators saying the rifts resolution wasn't good enough to read text in cockpits, maybe they were on a DK2 though
That lawsuit probably isn't going so well if they are cutting a full hundred off the pricetag.

You can read text a good bit away unless it's majorly tiny, but either way because it's VR you can also just move closer to it just like in real life and you'll be totally fine. I don't remember if the DK2 had positional tracking so maybe that wasn't an option then
That lawsuit probably isn't going so well if they are cutting a full hundred off the pricetag.
This is a really weird conclusion, they're backed by facebook so this clearly isn't a desparate attempt to stave off bankruptcy (nor would it really necessarily help either, the price is set to a certain level for a reason). In another source they talked about hiring someone to pretty exclusively look at improving manufacturing costs being at least part of it.

(And spotting enemy aircraft according to AWACS)
1.12 tracking patch came out yesterday and it's fixed almost everyone's problems with glitchy tracking, especially 3 sensor setups.
Got 1.12 and the unit finally works on my main machine again (Where I do my flight sim stuff), but still not working on any other machines. I had it working for months on a Asus Laptop with a 4th gen QC i7 and a 970m for playing stuff in the front room. Got no space at the workstation.

It's way, way below the recommended spec for DCS World and that's presumably not a recommended spec for VR, which is way more demanding

The 970m does the job just with because of ASW tacking up the slack just fine. Was able to play games like onward without even realising that the frame rate was not a solid 90 because of ASW.

Onward's system spec recommends a 970 for minimum which may or may not be accurate, but either way ASW is useful but not magic and you should not expect to be able to run a game with a graphics card that benchmarks at less than half the performance of the min spec reliably (even if it was working at some point)
