Hello and welcome everyone to this exciting thread of vomiting, diarrhea, and food poisoning. First off, lets talk about the specific college in question.
http://www.marietta.edu/
Marietta College. A private liberal arts college in southern Ohio. The college itself isn't terrible, but most of the people there. Anyway, this thread isn't to complain about the people, we're here to complain about the food.
Now typically food at college ranges from terrible to great. I've toured a few with amazing diners, various fast food restaurants, and other types of food dispensing places. Now Marietta college, on the other hand, signed a contract with a specific food business. This "food business" runs about four locations on campus. One in the library, as a "cafe." One near the book store called, "Gilman Express". There is a place in the basement of one of the office buildings named "Izzies". Most people eat here after featuring stomach problems from the fourth, and the biggest, restaurant on campus. Gilman, as it is called by the students and staff, is a buffet style restaurant under the bookstore that serves breakfast lunch and dinner. The food isn't awful in most of these places and most of the campus either eats at Gilman or Izzies. Now that the background is out of the way, we can move onto the real story.
Fucking Food Poisoning.
Recently, every student recieved an email saying that a few students reported having "gastrointestinal issues" and that they were sent to the hospital, and that they were investigating the issue. Here's the email.
In cooperation with both city and county health organizations, Marietta College is currently investigating the cause of yesterday’s limited campus occurrence of gastrointestinal illness.
The Office of Student Life reports that a small number of students were treated and released at Marietta Memorial Hospital last night and in following standard procedures the College contacted Dining Services and area health officials to help pinpoint the origins of the illness.
In seeking to discover the cause of the illness, Dining Services has immediately reviewed its quality assurance protocols in order to determine if the student illness may have been food borne or originated in some other fashion.
Pending the outcome of that inquiry, precautions include encouraging students to frequently wash their hands to prevent the spread of any illness transmitted from person-to-person.
If you are presenting any symptoms, please contact your Resident Director.
We will update the campus community when additional information is available.
Yeah. Word gets around and people start freaking out. Of course, it's too late. Here's the second email.
To the Marietta College community:
In response to a small number of additional occurrences of gastrointestinal illness on Friday, Marietta College officials have decided to indefinitely close Izzy’s and the Chlapaty Café as a precautionary measure.
Gilman Dining Hall will continue normal hours on Saturday, Jan. 16, and Sunday, Jan. 17. Brunch is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner is from 5-6:30 p.m. each day. In seeking to reduce the spread of illness, Dining Services will hand all food to students at Gilman, and eliminate any self-service stations.
In cooperation with both city and county health organizations, Marietta College is currently investigating the cause of the limited campus occurrence of gastrointestinal illness over the past two days. The College is working with Marietta Memorial Hospital and the Washington County Health Department to help pinpoint the origins of the illness.
College officials want to encourage all students to frequently wash their hands to prevent the spread of any illness transmitted from person-to-person.
If you are presenting any symptoms, please contact your Resident Director.

Rumors I've heard talk about some contaminated chicken being used around the entire campus. Because we only have one dining service running the campus this makes sense.
Now you may be thinking, wow Jax, where do you fit in to all of this?
Well, here's how I fit. I've been shitting and puking my guts out for about 12 hours nows. The diarrhea has turned into piss shooting out of my ass thats hurts so bad it's hard to wipe, and then it's hard to sit down. The vomiting has been so bad that it's started coming out of my nose. If you've ever vomited out of your nose, you know how terrible it is. It burns, it makes you cough, you sense, and everything that typically comes out of your mouth comes out the nose, including anything you've recently ate. For me, it was agonizing blowing small bits of chicken out of my nose. On top of all that, I have a serious case of the chills. Three shirts, two socks, pants, and I'm still freezing. Hopefully this will just blow over.
Of course, what is Marietta going to do about this for the students? It's hard to say, all I can hope for is that everyone successfully recovers, and that they REMOVE the terrible food service here, and replace it with, well, anything. Currently, I'm being patient and waiting for more news on the situation. Hopefully we'll see something in the local newspaper, or on TV.
Here's the latest email from my College:
To the Marietta College community:
This evening, College officials were notified that some early test results conducted by the Marietta City Health Department are positive for a bacterium that could be caused by food or water. As of today, approximately three dozen Marietta students have been treated for gastrointestinal illness at Marietta Memorial Hospital since Thursday.
The College will continue to cooperate with the City Health Department and Marietta Memorial to help pinpoint the origins of the illness. The test samples will be forwarded to the state health department on Monday for further testing.
As a precautionary measure, Izzy’s, Chlapaty Café and Gilman Express will remain closed indefinitely. Gilman Dining Hall will continue normal hours throughout the week.
In an effort to reduce the spread of illness, Dining Services will hand all food to students at Gilman, and eliminate any self-service stations.
College officials want to encourage all students to frequently wash their hands to prevent the spread of any illness transmitted from person-to-person. The staff at Gilman are continuing to disinfect the dining area, and Physical Plant staff are disinfecting highly frequented common areas to help reduce the spread of illness.
If you are presenting any symptoms, please contact your Resident Director, or report to the Office of Student Life or the Campus Health Center. If you need emergency assistance we encourage you to go to Marietta Memorial Hospital.
We will update the campus community when additional information is available.
TL;DR that wall of text: Food poisoning spread around ALL campus feeding areas and now everyone is vomiting/shitting their guts out, including me. Fuck college food.
I love college food though, and I never get sick.
That sucks some major balls :frown: I always hope something like that doesn't happen to our food.
Yes well, your campus must give a fuck about food, and have a decent staff running the place. Most of the staff workers here are complete dicks, and try to overcharge you at every turn.
The diarrhea has turned into piss shooting out of my ass thats hurts so bad it's hard to wipe, and then it's hard to sit down.
Oh god... I'm sorry but I laughed so hard when I read that.
I feel for you though. I had food poisoning like eight years ago. Enjoy it while you can.
ionno why
i just dont care for it
College food is okay, but it gets boring. (At least at my school)
Southern Ohio, you say? We can totally meet up! Is it near Cincinnati?
Also, Ohio State has absolutely none of those problems, dare I say it, the food is actually better then back home.
I have honestly NEVER heard of puking out of the nose......
Get better soon though. [img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/rating/heart.png[/img]

Until you've done it, you haven't truly lived...
But I like college food.
:saddowns:
I don't really know if Swedish colleges have the same issue but I can't eat their food regardless since I am on a strict paleolithic diet to maximize my workout and exercise results and maintaining a peak in health. I plan on not being exposed to having an error in my insulin responses, as opposed to those who not eat paleolithic food. I say enjoy your metabolic diseases, diabetes and cancer (which moreover killed my grandfather). But I'll try not to turn this into a rant just because I miss him.
My "College Food" is awesome. We've got our own Quizno's in the student lounge. :) Awesome sandwiches, especially the Chicken Carbonara. :P
OP, get a lawyer and try to profit off of this.

"paleolithic diet"? Oh god, it's not that stupid new trend I read an article about recently, where people don't eat bread and stuff 'cause it's not what cavemen ate?
tell me, what was the average lifespan of a caveman?

100 years, with healthy teeth and healthy cardiovascular systems.

Talk to a dietitian before you keep killing yourself with this fantastic "diet", alright?
A food company called Chartwells runs all of the places we eat here at Texas State.
We get fucked up so often on the food, it's coined the term "Chartwelled".
So if a guy is in the restroom shitting his brains out and throwing up organs, we say "Yo man, you get Chartwelled?" and you'll almost always hear a "GOD DAMMIT YES".

No, South eastern Ohio. Right next to the ohio river.
And I would totally get a lawyer, and so would the rest of the students, but it's a private college. We couldn't do shit.
On another update, I took a ridiculously long, and hot shower only to vomit about 3 times very violently. Like the type that splashes out of the toliet and gets everywhere. My arms were disgusting. I think I lost a few pounds. Although now, I do feel better. So that's a plus.

Maybe because they got their exercise running after their food with spears.
Most of these condititions it's claimed to prevent are as much from lack of exercise as diet.
At least you're not as crazy as those fuckers who think eating raw meat is healthy.

You are referring to the wrong time age. Paleolithic time existed long before neolithic time. I am on a Paleolithic diet, not a neolithic diet, there is a large difference. I was also already aware of that information, this was a direct result of agriculture.
They do a pretty good job with the food at my campus, they change out old food pretty regularly, and they have fresh salads and all that jazz too.
I go to Sinclair up near Dayton, their food isn't bad at all.
Of course I almost never buy it because college food is damn overpriced. Well, it's not really overpriced compared to a nice sandwitch shop or anything, but I'd take the nice sandwich shop anyday.
Spending $4-$5 a day on "lunch" (read: small sandwich and chips) racks up when you can make your own lunch that's x2 big at home for something like $0.80
Of course I'm a poor basterd who can't afford shit so yeah

Paleolithic, then: average lifespan of 33 at birth and 39 for those who survived childhood (source: the wiki link above which in turn is taken from encyclopedia britannica)
What diet gimmick site gave you the 100 years figure?

Do you cook your food Mr Caveman?

I under stand. I only buy these sandwhich combos they have in these awkward vending machines. It's like 1.00 to 3.00 for a meat and cheese sandwhich, can of pop, and a bag of chips.
Aw. Well I hope you get better mate. <3
