Yoga pants are already harboring a new epoch of virtual nudity I welcome our new Gel overlords
Okay but why? So you can sell rich people a $15,000 shirt that changes colour throughout the day?
Maybe. But as the tech becomes easier to manufacture, it'd become cheaper to make such items of clothing, and the price would drop to four-figure costs, perhaps even three or two-digit?
Definitely wouldn't want to try and compile something while wearing it though...

They really just handwaved a whole lot of nothing apart beyond the "lol it computes stuff". From what I'm reading, they have only theorized this chemical gel they plan on using using a chemical oscillation as the oscillating medium. Which can happen in a way very similiar to a Briggs-Raucsher chemical oscillation. and somehow this theorized gel is sensitive to light which would be biased towards one chemical over the other leading to one polarization in the piezoelectric rod. They then wire up these "gel sensors" in serial so that each of them can influence their neighbors and the piezoelectric material can then re influence the gel somehow to imitate the shown pattern/picture. Here's their paper. TL;DR: Unless I'm missing something. So far (Assuming this chemical mix can be synthesized and actually behaves the way they expect it to in simulation), all they've really made is an very expensive CCD image sensor. It does not compute anything.
You can give people seizures while walking down the street with your rapid colour changing shirt
Okay but why? For example: imagine a shirt flashing "BUY IT" "USE IT" "BREAK IT" "FIX IT" etc with a Daft Punk logo on the back.
id rather have clothing that commutes. i can just do absolutely nothing and go 10mph in any direction i want would probably end up looking something like this
