YouTube to kill the unskippable 30-second ads next year
Google has announced that in 2018, it will end non-skippable 30-second ads that appear before a YouTube video. In a statement first given to Campaign then confirmed by The Verge, a Google spokesperson said the company will focus on commercial formats that are more engaging for both advertisers and viewers.
“We’re committed to providing a better ads experience for users online. As part of that, we’ve decided to stop supporting 30-second unskippable ads as of 2018 and focus instead on formats that work well for both users and advertisers,” Google said.

In April last year, YouTube introduced the six-second unskippable bumper ad format. It’s understood that the platform intends to promote this format more heavily in the year ahead. This includes all formats, including TrueView.

i forgot youtube even had ads with how long ive used blockers
Whenever I use youtube on mobile and get one of these, I just close the video and go do something else.
Hopefully, the ads will be like the 360 VR commercials we rarely have, that is, if they're going to aim for the user-advertiser connection. They bring users attention while at the same time, learning about whatever is being advertised.
Problem with it this is that, once you seen it, you seen it all basically. Now after the first few times, it'll just grow to be an annoyance on you.
Fucking finally, I remember getting an unstoppable 45 second ad, it just turned me off the video completely

I once got a full 3 minute unskippable music video, when I was trying to watch a different music video.
I wish they would put a time limit on how long an advert can be; I have seen them as long as 20 minuets, hell, seen some which are longer.
So wait a year for them to get the stick out of their ass.. or..

I'm curious if this is good or bad for youtubers.
On the one hand, that means you don't get 30 second ads which give you money. On the other, that means higher viewer retention which means more viewership of the scattered ads throughout the video (and the video itself).

I'm really curious about the approach where you might get served the 60-minute pilot for a new show, on longer videos. I've seen it twice now, but i don't remember the shows. I only remember that they were skippable after 5 seconds like normal, and that i was totally bewildered but bemused, that if i wanted to, i could watch an hour long TV show instead of the ~20 minute YouTube video i was trying to load.

Honestly I forgot youtube even had ads because ublock gets all of them.
The only good ads are ones that instantly get to the point, or are short and amusing
This reminds me of watching new episodes of It's Always Sunny on fxnetworks.com. In order to watch the videos I need to log in with our directv account and I still get ads in the video. The thing about the ads is that the website knows I'm blocking them so it asks me to disable them while it counts down until the advert is supposed to end and then it plays the rest of the episode. But like, why the fuck would I turn on ads? On top of already paying for this, why the fuck would I or anyone willingly subject themselves to annoying adverts for no monetary gain. They're part of a giant media conglomerate, I don't give a fuck about giving them some pennies.
I have never once looked at an advertisement in any medium and bought its product as a result, unless I was specifically looking for something like that in the first place.

Use uBlock.

i once had a (thankfully skippable) ad that was literally the entire 46 minute long pilot episode for a new tv show
Still not going to unblock youtube or any other site, I don't really care what format they come in, just being there is enough reason for me to block them.

Its almost as if that's how advertising works.
I think it might be a good idea to turn off AdBlock next year to show support of this. Otherwise they'll say "it isnt working" and do something stupid.

Unfortunately I will never turn off my adblocker until ads aren't security risks.
Fortunately Google, owning on of the largest ad services on the internet, is in a place to fix that as well. All they need to do is disabled JavaScript in ads.

But if you keep it on you'll never see that stupid shit anyways
Unless they actually start injecting the ad content into the actual video stream dynamically in a way that adblockers can't remove without removing the entire video, in which case, bye bye userbase!
Plenty of companies have figured out that the best way to advertise on youtube right now is to contact the youtubers directly to have a spot for their product at some point in the video, so ditching this was bound to happen sooner or later. Good thing it happened sooner too.
Fortunately having Google Music I have Youtube Red. Its pretty fantastic to never see ads on any platform.
But this is still the right move. unskippable ads just are just a "fuck you" to users and just encourages people to turn to ad blockers.
i'd rather them remove the advertisement that plays in the middle of the fucking video. we're not watching tv where the show we're watching is optimized, i guess you can say, to be cut at certain points during its runtime for ads.

All of the corporate drokk, none of the schway aesthetics.
This is the worst cyberpunk existence.
I have never experienced an unskippable ad. I've always been able to skip after 4-5 seconds or whatever.
Is it a region specific thing?
Its almost as if that's how advertising works.
Uhh, no, advertising exists to try to convince you to buy something you weren't already going to buy. If their effect on you is anything else they have failed.

Hey kids, need ideas for your dystopian cyberpunk novel? Look no further than the patent office!
