Calling it now, it's just gonna be an Xbox controller with the Steam logo on it. That seems to be where it's headed.

Wrong. The trackpads will make it unique. Especially for strategy games.
And there will be something like a steamworkshop for the game profiles of other players, to download.
I feel like the work they're putting in to make it unique will make it flop because while sure, it's neat, physical sticks feel more responsive.
There's a reason I never use my phone as a controller.

You cannot compare it to a touchscreen of a phone. The trackpads can be used as buttons (to click), but most importantly, you are getting haptic feedback with electric magnets. It's very hard to explain, but it is not like a touchscreen.

I'll believe it when I see it in regards to it being any good for RTs games.

Here's a rather old video where Portal 2, Civilization and CSGO is being played. Maybe it's interesting for you

Civ is turn based though, I could play that with a 360 controller if I really wanted to. What I want to see is them playing something like Starcraft and not getting completely obliterated by even a new player.

Starcraft being used as an example is really biased here, it's all about macro management so keyboard is necessary to play it.

I can see the Steam Controller working well with games like Total War but not Starcraft.
