My friend needs a build that's reasonably priced compared to a new console. Just need the computer itself, no extra. Everything except the OS.
For gaming? Does he live near a microcenter http://www.microcenter.com/
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/39uhl This is about the best he can get for the price range.
Why a dual-core?
Why not? It's a good processor. Fine since you two seem to think it isn't good please tell me what processor would you use? The i3 will beat the FX 6300 and even in some applications the 8320, so please what are you two thinking?
This should be better http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Lilyo/saved/432Y He'll have to drive to a microcenter though to get the CPU+motherboard deal, so unless he lives somewhere near one it won't work unfortunately. You could always get the 6300 and just overclock it to 4.0ghz though for $20 less, though the 970 isn't great for overclocking and I'm thinking the 6350+970 deal might still be available.

The i3 won't outperform the 6350, especially if you overclock it, not to mention it has significantly more L2 and L3 cache. It's also future proof, why would you possibly get a 2core right now as the industry is starting to take more advantage of multiple cores? Also it's a great deal and you can also get a aftermarket cooler. Though I guess the 270 is better overall. Also with the bundle offer the 1866 ram + hdd is cheaper right now.

Also, the 6300 and 6350 isn't even a six core processor, it's a triple core with hyperthreading. So really it depends on what games you plan on playing as to which processor will be a better match.
Fx cores are far beyond multithreading. The FX 6000 series uses 6 Bulldozer cores, which are 3 physical modules, each with 2 integer cores and 1 shared floating point unit, and since each core utilizes its own thread you're getting double threaded integer tasks for each module which doubles its throughput. Hyperthreading does not do that for intel cores since hyperthreading is a software feature that passes 1 core through 2 threads. Modules can't be called cores... And of course a CPU with more cores is more future proof than a duo. Look at most modern high end games, they pretty much all take advantage of multiple cores now. An FX 8350 can run Crysis 3 almost as well as an i7 3930k which costs 3 times the price.

The bulldozer architecture is complete shit. even with its "2 integer cores and 1 shared floating point unite" it barely beats a dual core in multithreaded applications. As I said it depends on what games you play if you play more games that benefit from multithreaded, get the 6300, if you play more games that benefit from single core performance(which most do right now and can't speculate future titles) get the i3.
Of course you can speculate future titles based on the newest high end games lol
whatever the hell this person gets will be better than what they have now and can be replaced come the need just post 2 good CPU'S and let OP decide based on googles opinion
Of course you can speculate future titles based on the newest high end games lol
That does not give you a guaranteed answer it's basically just a guess, you have no idea what companies will do. Which is why I don't give people answers of what could and could not happen in the future, I give people facts on what is out now and how they perform now. So let him decide what he wants.
I'm just having a discussion.
I have a alienware aurora I would get rid of.
