In an effort to boost solider morale, researchers at a U.S. military lab in Massachusetts have developed a pizza that can stay on the shelf for up to three years and still remain good to eat.
U.S. soldiers have been pleading with their bosses to have pizza added to their "meals ready to eat" packages, also known as MREs. These kits replaced canned food back in 1981 and are utilized in combat zones or areas where field kitchens can't be set up.
The new long-lived pizza, considered a kind of "holy grail" among food technologists, was developed by the U.S. Army's Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center after two years of research. It can literally be left on the counter for three years, and it would still be edible.
Incredibly, the pizza doesn't require any refrigeration or freezing. The Associated Press explains:
Scientists' efforts were long thwarted because moisture in tomato sauce, cheese and toppings migrated to the dough over time, resulting in soggy pizza that provided the perfect conditions for mold and disease-causing bacteria to grow.
But on-and-off research over the past few years helped them figure out ways to prevent moisture from migrating. That includes using ingredients called humectants — sugar, salt and syrups can do the trick — that bind to water and keep it from getting to the dough.
But that alone would not help the pizza remain fresh for three years at 80 degrees, so scientists tweaked the acidity of the sauce, cheese and dough to make it harder for oxygen and bacteria to thrive. They also added iron fillings to the package to absorb any air remaining in the pouch.
this is actually pretty awesome.
Pretty sure my local pizza place already beat them to it, or at least it tastes like that.
a set up to the m.r.e?
edit: nvm, I've read the rest.
Yum, extra chemicals please.
Yum, extra chemicals please.
Exactly what im thinking, slightly more acidic cheeses and iron fillings to the packages...
I would not want to eat that at all
Well it isn't like this is meant to be consumed for fun...
Yum, extra chemicals please.
Although "chemicals" doesnt really mean anything bad.
Watch as it tastes horrible, as per the MRE standard.

Well yeah, but still. Not that I'm against processed foods and I've had more then a few MREs in my time, but talking about adding iron filling and increasing acidity and modifying bread to fortify it against sopping up liquids... maybe it'd have been better if I just read the title instead of the whole article.

Are you a soldier with nothing else to eat in the middle of a combat zone? No? Then yeah, you probably wouldn't.

Bread acidity is regulated all the time, never heard of sourdough bread?
And the iron is added to the packet, not the product.
Watch as it tastes horrible, as per the MRE standard.
Well damn I must have shitty tastes cause I liked MREs when I had to eat them after Hurricane Katrina.
I'm pretty sure its more about keeping you healthy and not hungry rather than tasting stellar
Who let's pizzas last 3 years? Mine are usually gone in less than a 3 days.
apparently it just tastes like room temperature microwaved pizza. which I can only assume would be pretty awesome if you haven't eaten an actual meal in days while being shot at constantly.
Newer, and some older MREs tasting bad is entirely psychological. In a blind taste test, they taste fine, as they should since they're loaded with fats/sugars/calories and other good stuff. It's just the stigma associated with MREs alters people's perception of them.

3 Days? Mine are lucky to last 3 hours. 3 Minutes if i have a friend over.
-snip-
I always thought US MRE's are pretty damn good. Except the Beef Stew. Those are terrible

Iron filings are commonly added in little packets to preserve stuff in foods. It isn't in your food, nor does it ever even touch your food.
The rest of it is fairly straightforward stuff.
Jesus, this mindset is why we are still ruining the environment with organic crops. Just because it is artificial, it doesn't make it bad for you.

There should be a "tell me more" rating so I don't have to make an entire post dedicated to this question: how are organic crops ruining the environment? I've never heard that claim before.

Because they require large amounts of land to be made arable to grow them when a GM crop can be grown in the same area without the need for vast irrigation systems and so forth.
Chili mac and chicken with noodles both tasted damn good.

My guess is he's mentioning how organic crops require more water for the same yield as GMO Crops, and take more minerals and nutrients from the grounds then GMOs.
In turn this leads to a greater depletion of fresh water, and as such fucks over our planet.

Yep.

you would have to do really really bad to make a pizza that isn't, at the very least, okay.
from my experience even the shittiest of pizzas are still in the "eh it's adequate" range

Goto a Petro Serve or Shell Gas station, and buy one of their frozen pizzas. They taste like a fucking truck tire.
I would not want to eat that at all
If you had to live on MREs then yes you would
Its a morale booster not a delicacy
Watch as it tastes horrible, as per the MRE standard.
I usually pick up a few MRE's each year at a surplus store, they're actually not bad at all. Maybe I just have shitty tastes but all the better for me, I can enjoy it. They're convenient to take on trips and whatnot and most of the time the stuff is on par with canned foods. The blueberry cobbler desert is REALLY good too. I've got one left on my shelf right now, chicken and dumplings. Tasty.
Plus, along with the full meal, you get the accessories and heater which are pretty handy. Matches, napkin, hotsauce, salt, etc...and you can make a wafer kind of cookie if you pour the sugar packet into the nondairy creamer then caramelize it over a flame.
