Gaza is often described as 'the world's largest open air prison' because no-one is allowed to enter or leave. But that seems a bit unfair to prisons - they don’t have their electricity and drinking water cut off randomly almost every day.

A local man came up and said 'Please - what does this mean?' I explained I wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting photos on my website – but on the internet people only look at pictures of kittens.
Street artist Banksy has gone undercover in Gaza to make a short documentary about the war-torn region.
The elusive graffiti artist appears to have created several new works in the region after apparently entering through underground tunnels.
In a short clip posted on his website, a hooded Banksy re-emerges through a metal door into a neighbourhood which appears to have been devastated by war.
The video then shows him using stencils and spray paint to create graffiti artwork in the region, which has been the epicentre of severe conflict between Israel and Palestine
Among the works created is "Bomb damage", a cut out apparently showing mythical Greek figure Niobe cowering with her head in her hands amid a pile of rubble.
Another shows a kitten with a pink bow around its neck playing with a metal ball
The satirical film is framed as a travel advert and opens with the caption: "Make sure YOU discover a new destination. Welcome to Gaza".
It ends with the message, painted onto a wall, which reads: "If we wash our hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless we side with the powerful - we don't remain neutral."
Banksy even made a video with it.

still remember when he last went to Gaza in 2005

I love this type of art.
Took me a moment to realize what the quote actually meant but I understand it now.

yep, basically if we ignore the conflict we're helping the ones that are causing it.
other Banksy work from 2005 when he was in Gaza last if anyone is interested

thanks banksy, you've saved the world again! this is cool and all but he's just preaching to the choir.
thanks banksy, you've saved the world again! this is cool and all but he's just preaching to the choir.
You've perceived his art absolutely wrong if you think he thinks he's saving the world
thanks banksy, you've saved the world again! this is cool and all but he's just preaching to the choir.
Still, he had the balls to actually go to Gaza and try to make the world think about this whole conflict a bit more.
Still, he had the balls to actually go to Gaza and try to make the world think about this whole conflict a bit more.
I'd say he's gone to try to spread his view in a propoganda-ish type video.
I'd say he's gone to try to spread his view in a propoganda-ish type video.
It's not really propaganda if Gaza is actually a shithole because of Israel.
yep, basically if we ignore the conflict we're helping the ones that are causing it.
I like Banksy's art but I really don't like that quote and the many variations of it. It's just a restatement of the 'you're either with us or against us' idea, and it's the exact same argument politicians use when they say that if you don't support their increasing measures against terrorism, you're siding with the terrorists. It's a cheap piece of rhetoric that tries to turn neutrality or uninvolvement into active support for the status quo.
I am all for raising awareness of Gaza because most people are not aware of how the people living there are being treated, but being accusatory towards people who don't want to be involved for one reason or another is not a good vehicle for change.

But he's right, by virtue of us standing and watching on the sidelines we are active participants in this.
It doesn't really matter if you like the train of thought or not, most people probably don't but it doesn't change the fact that we have the ability to put pressure on Israel to stop their bullshit but we fucking don't and as such they're free to carry on.
You've perceived his art absolutely wrong if you think he thinks he's saving the world
so you assumed the latter half of my post was the sarcastic side?
if you really want to get to the nuts and bolts of the situation then there is no way to perceive art wrong, it being a subjective collaboration between the artist and observer
Still, he had the balls to actually go to Gaza and try to make the world think about this whole conflict a bit more.
but are they going to? nope. this is a publicity stunt for his many commercial projects.
It's not really propaganda if Gaza is actually a shithole because of Israel.
maybe you only believe that because of said propaganda? have you ever been to gaza?
It must be crazy being such close friends with Banksy
maybe you only believe that because of said propaganda? have you ever been to gaza?
You don't need to go to Gaza to know how bad it is there.
I love Banksy's art, it's not your typical daily shit graffity on wall saying "Rap 4Eva" or some other kind of crap at which you just look at think - "oh god, fucking vandals" , when you look at Banksy's art you think - "....." trying to understand meaning of it and think about it, I often spend lots of time just looking at his art and understanding context of it.

Oh okay, sure it's propoganda, I mean everything that I can't personally witness is obviously propoganda.
Is it propganda that Amnesty International discovered that Israel knowingly hit hospitals during the recent Gaza war?
http://www.politics.co.uk/news/2014/08/07/the-evidence-that-israel-deliberately-targeted-hospitals-and
How about the fact that a sizeable chunk of homes in Gaza are all kinds of fucked up thanks to Israeli bombs?
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/11/damage-gaza-homes-israel-hamas-conflict
In Gaza City, which has a population of half a million, 20%-25% of the housing stock had been damaged, said Nihad al-Mughni of the engineering department.
Mohammed al-Kafarna, the mayor of Beit Hanoun, a northern town which saw fierce fighting and heavy bombardment, said 70% of homes were uninhabitable. "Basically the town is unliveable. There is no power, water or communications. There are not the basics for life," he said.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Reconstruction materials. Amnesty International and other organisations report that cement, glass, steel, bitumen, wood, paint, doors, plastic pipes, metal pipes, metal reinforcement rods, aggregate, generators, high voltage cables and wooden telegraph poles are high priority reconstruction materials currently with no or highly limited entry into Gaza through official crossings.[19] A UN report by Kevin M. Cahill said reconstruction was halted because of lack of steel, cement or glass, among other building materials.[15]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_imports
But yeah sure it's all propaganda that can't be trusted because I wasn't there to personally witness it.

alright; I believe banksy's efforts have more merit than you lead me to believe about your opinion of him in your original post. Explaining to me how you can't perceive art wrong isn't really an answer, why do you just dismiss it as a publicity stunt?
maybe you only believe that because of said propaganda? have you ever been to gaza?
Yeah man and no one can prove to me that the theory of evolution is valid unless they've worked in a lab and seen the fossil records
maybe you only believe that because of said propaganda? have you ever been to gaza?
So wait are you saying that Gaza isn't actually that bad, and we only think so because of propaganda?

That kid looks pretty realistic.
So wait are you saying that Gaza isn't actually that bad, and we only think so because of propaganda?
yeah in real life those anti-semite liberals just airlift palestinians to demolition sites so they can make propaganda of buildings blowing up and children's burnt corpses and leveled city blocks
Gaza sucks a lot but it seems like Banksy is blaming Israel for Gaza's current state. Israel generally isn't interested in Gaza and only responded because of this summer's kidnapping plus Hamas's firing rockets indiscriminately at Israel. Gaza is fucked because of Hamas provoking Israel.
But he's right, by virtue of us standing and watching on the sidelines we are active participants in this.

I don't think you understand what ACTIVE means. Also, there's no "poweless" side in the war between palestines and israeli, and there's no good side to choose from either.

We are actively standing by mate, that's bad enough for me.
Yeah both sides suck cocks but it's naive to pretend they're both as bad as each other.

How can it be any kind of challenge to understand Banksy's art
It's so blatant and shallow, it can all be summed up as "Consumerism = Bad", "Rich people = Bad", or "War = Bad"
There's no depth or thought put into any of them, it's trashy vandalism hyped up as some deeply thoughtful pretentious garbage

i mean he sells pieces for millions
it's sort of difficult to put a super deep message in a piece of street art, it's an inherently shallow medium

Yet controversial enough to generate interest in the topic at hand.
Job done I guess.

It's not hard to be controversial, specially with such an easy theme.
Banksy is going to be in history books.
