Starting later this year, the company's newest console, the Xbox One, will support a limited number of older Xbox 360 games. Gamers will have two ways of playing old games that are part of the backward-compatible initiative. If users already purchased the games digitally through Xbox Live, they can simply log in and re-download the game on Xbox One without paying any additional cost. If they own the game as a disc, they'll have to download the game to their Xbox One hard drive, and the system will then check for the disc before launching the game.
So... is it cloud-powered like PlayStation NOW or emulator of some sort?
From what I'm seeing, you enter the disc and it uses that to confirm ownership so you can download an Xbox One compatible version [editline]15th June 2015[/editline]
is it 100% compatibility or just with some of the okayish games?
Apparently a limited catalog right now, of "about 100"
but will Xbox originals games e.g. Halo CE work like they did on 360? :v: [editline]15th June 2015[/editline] just don't expect anything that's rereleased on xbone to work, unless they work with discs they made it sound like they would be downloadable

I think they said you just put the 360 disk in and it automatically downloads it for free if it's in the available catalogue.
Wow, something that should have been there from the start.

The controllers still had the same amount of total buttons.
Sounds interesting. I don't see how this would work though. They've both got entirely different architectures. The 360 uses the IBM PowerPC instruction set architecture. The Xbone uses the x86-64 architecture. Maybe the games are just recompiled by the developers or something?
nice
xbox originals on 360 had huge issues because of the controller reformation (the removal of the black and white dots)
but they added the shoulder buttons above the triggers so there are enough buttons for it to work.

Wonder if that could mean anything for PC.
Pretty cool thing to add, extend the life of the used 360 games a bit. Plus you can use the new parties and new controller. More convenient it seems, neat
Maybe the games are just recompiled by the developers or something?
They said the only thing devs should do is say "yep, we are ok with this game being on xbox one" and everything else is handled by MS. So it's either streaming or some kind of an emulator. MS got almost unlimited resources and full technical information about the console and how it works so if one guy can make xbox 360 emulator with nothing but the info he got from reverse-engineering why MS can't?

Oh no, what will happen to the booming industry of HD remakes of games we played a year ago...?
Wow, something that should have been there from the start.
Yeah, i never thought that everyone would get so excited over a feature that should be guaranteed
Hopefully they'll be true 1080i now. No crappy upscale. Can't wait to play the true Halo experiences on my Xbone instead of using that crappy MCC. Reach on One here we come.
They said they're run natively on the Xbox One, which means they're ported to x86. Wonder if that could mean anything for PC.
Would be interesting to see if with the more capable hardware they'd be able to get the games in 1080p/60fps.
Would be interesting to see if with the more capable hardware they'd be able to get the games in 1080p/60fps.
I doubt it. Resolution is maybe plausible, but unlikely. FPS is a big no no, a lot of console games are programmed with a certain FPS in mind, shit will break if the game runs faster than originally intended.
I wonder if we'll see the list of games that'll work. Obviously all the Microsoft franchises like the older Halo games, maybe Dark Souls and the Mass Effect/Dragon Age series'. Maybe Gears.
The framerate on the demo looked like shit. It'll be interesting to see how well this will work.
I'm assuming they are, but does this mean that 360 Xbox digital games are now available for purchase through the Xbox One, or would you still need to buy them through the 360? Similarly, if you can buy 360 digital games through the Xbox One, are they also available with a 360 tied to the same account?

I can't see this being an issue.
Games equivalent ports on PC seem to run fine at 60fps. I can't see this being an issue.
There are lots of games on PC that also break in one way or another @ 60fps. Dark Souls 2 and NFS: Rivals being the two newer ones I remember. And these are PC ports like you say, so they have a bunch of PC specific code in them. Then imagine games that were programmed to only work on one platform at a locked framerate. I'm sure there are a lot of games that are programmed in a way that takes that into consideration, but there are also a shitton of games that don't. So yeah, not gonna happen unless they start making game specific profiles or something, which I don't see happening.
Wow, something that should have been there from the start.
yeah fuck microsoft
It doesn't seem like it's actual backwards compatibility if you're just downloading basic Xbox one ports with the disc as the product key instead of emulation. It seems similar to crossbuy on PS4, where some digital games you buy the ps3 version and get the ps4 version and vice versa, except with disks. It's a cool feature though! I wonder how much time it takes to make a basic 360 to xbox one port? Is it as simple as recompiling?
