I'm posting this for my brother, and i'll be writing from his point of view.
I have been getting artifacts on my desktop a lot ever since i built this computer, a couple of months ago. The first artifacts i got were little black squares, and they only affect my desktop image. They would usually show up after watching videos on youtube. I've monitored all of my temperatures, and none of them exceed what they should be. They don't even get close enough to overheating to cause these artifacts. Is my graphics card defective? I have a Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 6870 1gb graphics card, and the latest drivers. Here is what the artifacts generally look like.

I don't ever notice any artifacts while playing games, except randomly sometimes, but it almost seems like a game error, instead of a hardware error. The artifacts i have experienced are usually something like models stretch out all crazy in skyrim, or a black square in some smoke on battlefield 3. Thanks for your time.

Temperatures aren't the problem. My pc is practically identical, in a case with worse ventilation.
His graphics never gets over 84c, and everything else is much cooler than that.
It sounds like your videocard is failing or unstable. You can try downclocking it to see if you can stabilize it again.
