James Cameron's "Avatar" and Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" won the most awards at Friday's Critics' Choice Awards, but the top honor went to Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker" and its director-producer Kathryn Bigelow.
"Locker" was named best picture and Bigelow best director.
Accepting the best picture prize, screenwriter-producer Mark Boal said the award belongs to Bigelow "for her singular vision, for her endless inspiration and for never taking no as an answer."
Bigelow had thanked Boal when she accepted the director's honor, saying, "I stand here really because of one man, and that's Mark Boal."
"It's wonderful to have this honor," she continued, "but the recognition should also go to the men and women who are in the field to this day."
"Avatar" was named best action movie and it collected a heap of technical awards, including honors for cinematography, editing, art direction, sound and visual effects.
Cast kudos
The "Basterds" cast was the critics' pick for best ensemble. The film's villain, Christoph Waltz, was named best supporting actor and Tarantino won for his original screenplay.
"There's really only one group of people to thank," Tarantino said, "and that's the actors who actually took it from the printed page and put it up on the screen. My material is not easy. It's hard. I cannot have dumb actors do my material."
"Crazy Heart" was a double winner, with Jeff Bridges claiming the best actor prize for his turn as hard-drinking country singer Bad Blake. The film's theme, "The Weary Kind," won for best song.
"Up" won a pair of prizes, too: Best animated feature and best score.
There were actually two winners in the actress category, with Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock tying for the honor.
Streep said she loved playing Julia Child in "Julie & Julia."
"I'm really, really thrilled because I really love what I do," she said. "I love to work, and I love food and I love sex. And so did Julia Child. So it wasn't that much of a stretch."
Call for compassion
Bullock, who won for her performance in "The Blind Side," said she hadn't prepared a speech, but she used her time at the microphone to honor her fellow actresses and call for compassion for people who are suffering.
"We're all so lucky to be here tonight when so many others are in pain," she said. "I hope we can all send good love and thoughts and whatever we can."
"I'm so proud I made this film with you, Dad," he said.
Other honors went to Mo'Nique, who was named best supporting actress for her visceral portrayal of an abusive mother in "Precious"; Saoirse Ronan, who won best young actress for her work in "The Lovely Bones"; and "The Hangover," which was voted best comedy.
"Nine," which came into the contest tied with "Basterds" with a leading 10 nominations, ended up winless.
Winners are chosen by members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest such group in North America comprising 200 TV, radio and online film critics.
Jesus, I definitely didn't see that coming... :frown:
I've never even heard of the Iraq one.
All decent films in their own respects, it's nice to see that good movies are the ones winning awards.
Oh come on Inglorious basterds was awesome
Hurt Locker was an excellent movie don't mess

OH HO- HO!
Incoming shit storm. :banjo:
From me-- I hated that movie, Avatar and those basterds, were the best things to come out of the theatre the whole of these years. Besides, up to ten years in prison on your birthday for taking pictures during Avatar?
Give them some credit.
:argh:
Ah fuck it.
In my opinion the Hurt locker was better than inglourious basterds I dunno why.

Obviously haven't seen the opening of Avatar
This work is protected by FBI and shit, you can't, like, copy it, because that would be bad and we would take $250,000 of your moneys, if you decide to take a picture you will get like, um, ten years in prison and shit.
More or less.
All great films.
Thank God that New Moon didn't win anything.
Inglourious Basterds and The Hurt Locker were each absolutely amazing in their own regard.
Basterds had amazing writing, while The Hurt Locker was a realistic portrayal of modern-day war.
The hurt locker was a brilliant movie, it truly was. I haven't seen a movie like that in a good while.
I didn't like Inglourious Basterds that much. I looked good but once I saw it I didn't like it.

Too many talking scenes in my opinion. Especially at the pub scene. But it was a great movie.
All three though were magnificent and deserved the awards they got.

Heh, I thought the pub seen was great.
Anyway I saw the trailer for Hurt Locker. It looked great but I'll definitely have to see it now.

I loved Basterds. I went into the movie knowing it was going to be different and that's why I liked it. The dialogue was incredible. I also really enjoyed how most of the movie was in French or German.
Also saw that UP won best animated. Rightfully earned.
Haven't seen Locker yet, but I'm crazy with anticipation.

Yeah, I started watching it expecting a lot of over the top violence. It started off well, especially with the bear jew and hugo stiglitz, but then there was non-stop talking for like an hour, then another minute of shooting and another half hours of talking, then another couple minutes of shooting and that was it. It was still a good movie but some of the dialogue just dragged it down.

Those sort of scenes are Tarantino's style though. To be honest it was very good but not excellent.
Where's district 9 though?
I screamed "fuck yeah" when hurt locker won
Inglorious Basterds was a big let down. The Basterds were barely in it.
Rightfully so. Glad it won.
Hurt locker was a good movie, didn't deserve to win but it was still good.
Christoph Waltz's performance was Oscar material if you ask me.
Hurt locker was an awesome movie, it deserved that award. If any of you have not seen it, GO SEE IT NOW!
No praise for Cowboys and india-- I mean, Avatar?

Tarintino's movies pretty much always have more then one main story which eventually ties together.
Critics don't like mainstream shit. They are right most of the time.
Hurt Locker was a fucking incredible movie, I enjoyed it far more than any other film in the last year.
Oh come on Inglorious basterds was awesome
The Hurt Locker IMO was alot better since it sidestepped the politics of the war and managed to not glorify or exxagerate soldiers actions.
