It is a very solid sandbox MMO. If you like EVE/(old)Star Wars Galaxies/Ultima Online, you'll enjoy this.
GAHHHHHHHHH Freakin' "Buy A Founder Pack!" is leaking out of my E-mail box and onto the internet! [sp]Seriously, while I've gotten into both betas, I have yet to get an "invite". Only e-mails I've been getting are Founder Pack ads and now they are on Steam......[/sp]
I purchased the top-tier founder pack at the beginning of the year, didn't regret it at all. It's a solid sandbox MMO with alot of potential, as Korova mentioned - if you liked SWG (prior to.. Well, yeah..) you'll most certainly enjoy this. @SteakStyles; Sadly it's a matter of luck when it comes to beta keys, two friends managed to get one. They hvae been doing a fair few giveaways recently for the upcoming beta weekend to stresstest, been alot of sites giving them away. :)
Alot of the sites have keys that either work or don't work but the game is great when you have a group of friends to play with. The game is really grindy though one crafting skills takes a lot of time but leveling isn't too bad maybe a week to hit max level when you're blowing through quests. The patron system needs some work though
I was going ot try this, then I found out it's like 50GB to download.
???????????????????????????????? how does this relate to sandbox space games?
It's a sandbox game like EVE and Star Wars Galaxies (similar to Ultima Online) with traditional Everquest/WoW-like theme park elements. Multi-class system similar to other sandbox titles Guilds actually matter and become mini-factions of their own Trade routes Emphasis on politics In depth crafting system Player-ran judicial system (theft/murder/conspiracy) Territorial system (which includes meaningful Player vs Player interaction) Player owned settlements, fortresses, (literal) farming and housing It's not as much of a sandbox as any of the games I've listed above but it's definitely the first AAA MMO to include these features in a really long time. I've always believed that another AAA Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online Pre-Trammel sort of game can never exist again. I think it's wise to take the "sandpark" approach to developing MMOs because it gives players something to do that's professionally crafted by the people who made the game but it gives players the ability to be the content while the next patch is in the works. Making player interaction part of the content is something that MMOs have been really lacking for the past ten or so years. This one really does it right.
SWG was the most classic case of Lightning in a Bottle that we've seen in the MMO world since World of Warcraft. Both of them came out exactly when the medium needed and was ready for them. The execution and all the thousands of small variables that led to the initial explosion in popularity (and general quality of the game itself) of those two games is not realistically obtainable anymore; the gaming medium as a whole is completely different than how it was in the early 2000s. I legitimately believe the gaming industry would need to crash and reboot before we ever see an actual in-full SWG 2.0 styled game.
I played the beta and it felt awful. The entire fight mechanic system is like WoW. It's not 2002 anymore, we can do something more than tabbing to enemies and smashing a number.

I've played it and for me at least, it is Pre-CU SWG 2.0
