Borderlands The Movie Announced - Because Video Game Movies Always Succeed
Lionsgate, a premier next generation global content leader, is teaming with the publisher and creators of Borderlands, and renowned producers Avi and Ari Arad to adapt Gearbox Software’s critically-acclaimed blockbuster video game Borderlands into a tent-pole feature film, the parties announced today. Borderlands is an action role-playing first-person shooter video game created and developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, a wholly owned label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.
“We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tent-pole for a global audience,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. “Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The Borderlands games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”
Not sure how I feel about this.
It could be good if they don't try and drop the age rating as low as possible.
Trying to cash on Fury Road's success I see
A movie that takes place in the Borderlands universe might be good if they get proper writers and don't do it in-house.
I'm a huge Borderlands fan, but this doesn't even make sense.
Please don't do this. The cell shading is what brings it all together for me, that's lost in a live action film.

If anyone has seen or played Telltale's "Tales from The Borderlands", it's undeniable proof that you can have amazing writing and characters for Borderlands.
As long as they're taking inspiration from Telltale's series, and not from Anthony Burch's writing that is BL2's main plot, then I think we have a chance here.
Did they state whether it was live action or not?

OK, I've decided this will only work if Mr. Torgue is the main protagonist.

Anthony Burch retconned so much stuff that was canon in the first game.
If it's live action I don't think it will do well, if it's animated then yeah its probably got a shot.
This could be good if they make it as absurd and violent as possible. Movie needs to scream "psychotic."

I'm curious, what were those things he retconned?

I am never going to forgive him for everything he did to make going through Borderlands 2's story a fucking skull crushing headache to listen to. Everytime I play through it to level and loot, or chill with randoms or friends, I have to get ready for the parts where I roll my eyes and make audible groans for knowing what's about to happen at certain plot points, or from horribly cringy dialogue, worst of it being when Burch forced his feminist views into chunks of dialouge here and there.
Needless to say I'm very glad that Gearbox was smart enough to see he was shit and incompitent and booted his ass for it.

Roland was alot more fun sounding in BL1, and Mordecai was everyone's most favorite character to play.
Come Borderlands 2, Roland is an emotionless Call of Duty "Ramirez do this" kind of soldier commander, and Mordecai was presented as a pathetic drunk.
Borderlands: The Memevie
In all seriousness, if they do a good job, Borderlands is a pretty good setting for an enticing action movie.

Again, as long as they take inspiration from Telltale's writing and not Anthony Burch's writing, I think we'll be in good hands.
The reason video game movies fail is because they're usually headed by uptight middle aged men who couldn't give any less of a shit about the source material.
When we get a video game movie written and directed by a fan of said game, or someone who will at least respect it, then it'll be good.
I honestly didn't expect to see a Borderlands movie announcement this soon. I would rather have expected a Dead Space movie, or Tarantino doing Hotline Miami, but this is surprising.

Fuck it, just make a movie that doesn't have Anthony Burch style writing and I'll be fine.
Deadpool movie followed by Borderlands. We're entering the cinematic meme era.

where does it say it's going to be live action?
Wish I could get interested, but BL2 left such a bad taste in my mouth.
I can't wait to see how this new Mad Max movie pans out.

I wouldn't expect them to actually go the animated route with this film is all.
If it's not live action and they get the Telltale team to write this? Then I'm ALLLLLL on board, Tales from the Borderlands is superb.
But it'll be live action and telltale won't write it...

Not that it matters, tons of video games movies are announced and never go through. I doubt this one will.
This could work very well if they followed in the steps from Tales.

Like, if you ignore the graphical quality and replace it with live action then it could very much just be the opening for a Borderlands TV show.

Why not? Every form of media ever associated with the series has been animated, what were you expecting instead?

Ehhh I wouldn't say retconned. We could barely hear them in BL1. And quite a lot happened between the first and second game so maybe they changed a bit?

Live Action because it draws in more people almost every time.
Animated adult films do not do that well.
Games are more suited to a TV show format, imo.

Play Tales from The Borderlands my friend. It'll give you a far better taste.

If Borderlands 3 ever get's announced I'm certain we're gonna see some reference to The War Boys.
