Paedophiles who view indecent images but go no further should not be jailed but rehabilitated, a leading child protection police officer has said. Police forces "cannot cope" with the "huge" rise in reports, Chief Constable Simon Bailey, of the National Police Chief's Council, told the BBC. Figures show the number of child abuse reports is up by 80% in three years. His comments came as the national inquiry into child sexual abuse began its full public hearings on Monday. Chief Constable Bailey, the head of Operation Hydrant, which is investigating multiple allegations of historic sexual abuse across the UK, said he knew his view would cause nervousness and draw headlines.
Source: BBC NEWS The Telegraph
I totally agree with rehabilitation being an open utility society should use rather than demonizing them (then turning around and being surprised when someone eventually snaps and does it) but possessing indecent images (which I'm assuming is straight up child porn?) shouldn't go unpunished. A demand for child porn creates an environment where child porn gets produced. That being said, Loli or any sort of indecent imagery where no actual children are involved in production or consumption is another matter entirely.
Thing is with pedophilia is that it's a mental illness often caused by childhood abuse and/or trauma. There definitely should be more support available for these people. Demonizing them only makes it worse, and often ends in suicide or harm to others (namely acting on urges). Salon had a good article written by a past abused pedophile but it was removed in the wake of the Milo controversy.
Why not both?
Why not both?
Because they cant process this many pedophiles. It litterally says so in the article snippet in the op. Not to say, I imagine that prisons arent really a perfect envirment for rehabilitation. Especially when all your co-inmates want to violently murder you
in the UK they prosecute people for drawings so this statement makes sense. Doesn't make any sense to throw someone in jail for having what can be produced with a mind, pen, and paper and no harm to anyone anywhere. Obviously if you're involved in real child pornography you should be in prison as you're already harming children and are a danger to society. Rehabilitation can take place while your in prison once you've gone there.
I think they should be just left alone if they are not harming anyone.
Why not both?
because assuming they haven't done anything because of their impulses that's literally jailing someone for a thought crime they can't control.
because assuming they haven't done anything because of their impulses that's literally jailing someone for a thought crime they can't control.
suppose the fear is that they will go on creating demand for child pron (thus stimulating supply) or will go on to be a threat to children.
suppose the fear is that they will go on creating demand for child pron (thus stimulating supply) or will go on to be a threat to children.
yeah, which is why they need support and places to go hopefully before they do engage in whatever it is they're gonna do.
I think they should be just left alone if they are not harming anyone.
They are harming someone most of the time though. If they're watching real child porn, they're creating a demand for it and in turn causing harm to the children that are part of it.

i completely agree with this, pedophilia isn't something you usually choose to get into, so punishing people for something out of their control is just retarded and does nothing but make pedophiles feel like subhumans not every pedophile is a child rapist, and the vocal minority shouldn't steer our opinion of the silent majority
I never heard of such a thing as "child porn market" all i know that there are rings online that abusive pedophiles use to share images of their victims with each other free of charge.
You don't think there is people paying money to access child porn? My general opinion is that whenever pedophilia gets brought up, society turns medieval. Solutions such as "rape him", "murder him" and "mutilate him" are so common to be heard it makes me astonished.
I never heard of such a thing as "child porn market" all i know that there are rings online that abusive pedophiles use to share images of their victims with each other free of charge.
i think paid access rings are far more common than free rings in the deep web, actually.
i completely agree with this, pedophilia isn't something you usually choose to get into, so punishing people for something out of their control is just retarded and does nothing but make pedophiles feel like subhumans not every pedophile is a child rapist, and the vocal minority shouldn't steer our opinion of the silent majority
But if they're caught it implies they acted upon on it - either abusing or attempting to abuse minors or viewing/sharing nasty shit. At which point you're not punishing them for something out of their control (attraction to kids) you're punishing them for something in their control (acting on it). edit: And if they've proven themselves to be a threat, whether or not you believe in rehabilitation vs punishment, they need to be made separate from society to ensure they can't continue offending.
Dear fuck you degenerates are bunch a retards.
okay? got a point to contribute or are you just gonna flame
Dear fuck you degenerates are bunch a retards.
Are you from /pol/?
Dear fuck you degenerates are bunch a retards.
They are by no means saying it's okay, they need actual help not a prison sentence.
I think they should be just left alone if they are not harming anyone.
What a terrible idea. Viewing this shit could lead to them actually trying to do it.
Dear fuck you degenerates are bunch a retards.
This is kind of what Mango was talking about. Whenever someone dares to suggest "hey guys, paedophiles are human beings born with a mental illness they can't control" people go utterly ballistic and start to accuse you of being one.
What a terrible idea. Viewing this shit could lead to them actually trying to do it.
I get the idea behind this and don't know if I entirely disagree with it, but on the other hand if it's just drawn shit- there are hundreds of thousands, I wouldn't be surprised if there were millions of people out there with sexual fantasies that would hurt someone if exacted in reality. We don't monitor every last one.
What a terrible idea. Viewing this shit could lead to them actually trying to do it.
I don't know man do you want to rape someone after you watched porn? It just doesn't work that way.
I don't know man do you want to rape someone after you watched porn? It just doesn't work that way.
Consumption of child pornography requires it to be produced in the first place, and production of child pornography is inherently harmful.
Consumption of child pornography requires it to be produced in the first place, and production of child pornography is inherently harmful.
I'm talking about the fake stuff 3d, drawn...
What a terrible idea. Viewing this shit could lead to them actually trying to do it.
there's a lot of debate around that, but more people believe that CP actually reduces the chances for pedophiles to act out on their urges, though this of course isn't really the main problem with viewing CP, the fact that real children are still getting raped, and the fact that viewing it encourages that, is. though loli and simulated CP do the same thing without the harm.
I'm talking about the fake stuff 3d, drawn...
Maybe you should have specified that at the very beginning then?
I'm talking about the fake stuff 3d, drawn...
That wasn't clear from your first post in this thread.
I'm talking about the fake stuff 3d, drawn...
No one else here is
Maybe you should have specified that at the very beginning then?

That wasn't clear from your first post in this thread.
Ups sorry i kind of assumed you were talking about both...
