[t]https://electrek.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/ff_91_exterior_10.jpg[/t]
Faraday Future has just finished revealing their first car, the “FF 91”, in a livestreamed demonstration from CES 2017, and boy was the demonstration a doozy. The FF 91’s specs are incredibly impressive. With a 130kWh battery, it will have 1050 horsepower, which Faraday Future claims is the most of any electric car (but actually falls short of the Rimac Concept_One by 38hp) and 378 miles of EPA range. The 200kW DC charging system purportedly charges the car at a rate of 500 miles of range per hour (and a 15kW AC home charging system for 50% charge in 4.5 hours), and the car will include self-driving capability courtesy of a 3D LIDAR system embedded in the center of the hood. See more about the specs and presentation, and some photos, below the jump. Unfortunately it’s not just the FF 91’s specs which left the audience reeling – the demonstration had several miscues and technical difficulties, including a seeming reluctance to show the car under full lights without a spy camo paintjob (presumably to build dramatic tension); a strange on-stage 0-60 demonstration of several “benchmark cars” racing one-by-one across the stage, making it impossible for viewers to see which one of them was actually quickest; a failed demonstration of the car’s self-parking feature which left it stranded in the darkness at the back of the stage while CEO YT Jia stood alone center-stage under the lights without the car he was supposed to be introducing; a good amount of strange scripted banter between the various presenters; and poorly-timed applause breaks. Much has been made of Elon Musk’s occasionally poor public speaking skills, but it seems that Faraday Future also managed to one-up Tesla on that front as well. I liked the bit where immediately after talking about how environmentally friendly they are they showed them just wrecking the natural environment with big trucks.
the side view mirrors look like dildos
Would be nice if they could create something that looks like a car, not some ugly spaceship.
Would be nice if they could create something that looks like a car, not some ugly spaceship.
I think it looks nice, look at all that visibility.
the side view mirrors look like dildos
From thumbnail: Pfft, those are some real artisanal dildos you're usi- From full view: They actually look like big, bulbous anal dildos.
Is that 1050 horsepower claim like teslas "700 horsepower, but our packs can only output about 500" or is it actually capable of delivering that kind of power? I'm thinking it's the former. The sheer size of the equipment needed to reach that level of power is simply ridiculous, and the cooling requirements of a battery pack under that kind of load are absurd. Call my cynical, but I'll believe it when I see it. Unrelated, but this the dimensions on this thing are fucking huge. Xbox Huge. A Models S/X is already large. This thing is bigger.
Not really sure why people think it looks ugly, but IMO it's most of corporate bullshit talk, I'm very skeptical of their promises when they claim they are going to one-up the leading pioneer that is Tesla. I sincerely (!) hope I am wrong, but this looks like it's going to be an insane flop. A shame.
A soon to be released P100D update will bring the 0-60 on the Model S to 2.4, so there goes that accolade for them. The Model X also has a drag coefficient of 0.24 vs this thing's 0.25. Frankly I'm not sure which Tesla model they're trying to pit themselves against, it's much lower slung than the X and looks more like a sedan yet it's also... Massive. And where's the pricing information? With that laundry list of features there's no way in hell this is going for any less than $200k. But in watching this, all I could think was this is an extremely Chinese car. In America, we prefer our technology - most notably apps - to do one thing, and do it well. In China it's the opposite - they prefer as few apps that do as many things as possible. Cue the absolute fuckton of features in the FF. It looks like it also comes with two luxury seats in the back as opposed to a bench, which is another staple of Chinese luxury vehicles. If you're paying this much for a car, you're not the one driving it through the terrible traffic in China's major cities, bar none. Tesla offered this briefly for the same reason hoping to captivate a larger Asian audience. In all, as others have said, I'll believe it when I see it. Taking into account the on-stage snafus and the general shadiness of FF I'm still considering this vaporware.

suicide doors YEAH NO THANKS.
suicide doors YEAH NO THANKS.

In recent years, car companies have addressed these hazards with such safety features as seat belts, and locks requiring front-hinged doors be open before permitting rear-hinged doors to open.[5] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_door#See_also
I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they fixed the safety concerns with the doors. Unless you have another reason for disliking them?
Oh, and something else I noticed - the strip they used for the drag race comparisons is the Irwindale Speedway that I happen to frequent. There's a bit of a lane advantage that the regulars are aware of. Did anyone notice how in every race, the FF 91 was in the far lane? Well it just so happens the far lane is almost perfectly level where the close lane has a few rises and falls, effectively making it longer and slightly extending drag times. I was wondering why they would use an amateur 1/8 mile strip over the much more professional 1/4 mile at the Auto Club Raceway just a few miles away hahaha.
Nice car. Though, there needs to start existing a company that retro-fits already existing cars... much cheaper solution and much more viable.
Would be nice if they could create something that looks like a car, not some ugly spaceship.
Don't people usually complain that flagship cars these days are too boring?
Don't people usually complain that flagship cars these days are too boring?
Id taking boring over ugly anyday
Don't people usually complain that flagship cars these days are too boring?
No one wants to drive a weird mobile though.
Can you not do those stupid headlights?
I hope this electric car 0-60 dickwaving ends soon
I hope this electric car 0-60 dickwaving ends soon
nah, keep going until they start shipping with drogue parachutes and drag radials on all four
It looks like a Citroen. I actually thinks it looks nice, certainly nicer than Tesla's Model X.
the fucking shrek ear mirrors
It's probably not going to look the same when the reality of production sets in. Tesla had to change a lot with the Model X interior.
Whats with these new electric cars looking like everything except a car?
No one wants to drive a weird mobile though.
Tell that to all the kei enthusiasts then. I'd take those over a Camry any day.
why the fuck would you put suicide doors on any vehicle. they got that name for a reason.
Usually experimental/flagship/whatever cars look weirdo future ugly, but this is just weirdo future. I would drive it.
Whats with these new electric cars looking like everything except a car?
Well this hardly deviates except for the visual style of it.
Usually experimental/flagship/whatever cars look weirdo future ugly, but this is just weirdo future. I would drive it.
Same. I'd love to ride those "side mirrors"
why the fuck would you put suicide doors on any vehicle. they got that name for a reason.
Because doors on old horse-drawn carriages opened like that, it's supposed to give off a stately, upscale feel. (I guess)
The LED matrix thing on the grille looks familiar. Did they make something like this a while back?
