The term “Let’s Play” has become ubiquitous on YouTube since it’s used by nearly everyone who posts videos of themselves playing games (usually with colorful commentary). It’s the de facto term for that sort of content, basically. Judging from a recent trademark filing, it seems as if Sony is trying to prevent competitors from being able to use the term by trademarking it.
As noted by AllGamesBeta, this is in relation to YouTube videos and not for a new ad campaign. Here is what the filing says:
Electronic transmission and streaming of video games via global and local computer networks; streaming of audio, visual, and audiovisual material via global and local computer networks.
From the looks of it, Sony is filing this trademark so that competitors like Microsoft can’t use the term. It doesn’t appear that they intend to prevent regular YouTube users from using it themselves. However, it should be noted that there are many YouTubers who make a significant amount of money from Let’s Play videos. Someone like PewDiePie, who last year made over $7 million from his videos, would be a competitor, no?
FOR THE PLAYERZ
Another genius PR-move by a big company. Watching the process of the gaming industry going forward is quite an adventure.
Please no.
They shouldn't be allowed to trademark it because it's been in public domain for the longest while.
If they somehow acquire it then they're going to get a lot more backlash as they are now. I still don't understand how a corporation can throw down and acquire something that's been in common people's hands for years, and although they admit that they won't be going after youtubers (too little money?) it still leers of shitty dealings.
Yeah good luck with that :v:
I wanna hear SlowBeef's take on this.
Bunch of greedy fucking slimebags.
If they try this, then I hope the owner of the oldest listed Let's Play youtube video challenges them.
There is certainly a huge counter argument to be made from a legal perspective, but I'm sure Sony with keep throwing money at it until the term is theirs.
Wouldn't be surprised if they claim that the "play" part is from Playstation.
I want to know Rooster Teeth's Take on this whole thing since they have a whole series of videos dedicated to the title, Let's Play

that would be slowbeef from retsuprae, who is considered the creator of lets plays
good fucking luck with that sony... unless they are creating a offical Logo for Sony-Sponsored Let's Plays there is no way this will go through.
On top of that, oh no, whatever shall Microsoft do but come up with a synonym? Even though it's really shitty that they're taking this phrase, it's also useless.
Surely you can't just go out and trademark something you had no part in creating and have absolutely nothing to do with? Right?

Hell they even called their channel Let's play.

If you stuff the right amount of money up the ass of a jugde you could get anything.
Good luck on that, surely they can't be able to pull this off? Or are trademark laws that broken?
The makers of Candy Crush copyrighted the word 'candy'. So yeah, they're not good.

Didn't they get "saga" as well?
Good luck on that, surely they can't be able to pull this off? Or are trademark laws that broken?
They're broken enough for Sony to legitimately try this in the first place.
Fuck off Sony, nobody is gonna believe that you're doing this with good intentions.

And they're not the only ones, Let's Play is like a genre of videos on youtube. Good job Sony!
There's no way this will actually happen. It's just the inane dreaming of some out of touch suit that managed to get the media's attention. Pay it no mind.

just like how king trademarked "saga" right
I'd like to submit the entirety of YouTube as prior work your honor...
just like how king trademarked "saga" right
Fair enough. Stupid trademarks have happened, but more often then not, stupid attempts like this are shot down. Don't get me wrong, the system for this shit is garbage and easily abused, but I don't see this particular instance happening.
The trademark status is "non-final action" meaning the trademark as it is has already been denied for one reason or another. Likely because the office realizes how the term is already in use by tons of people and businesses. They'd likely need to change what they're attempting to trademark in order to satisfy the office. And you can't really make a change to the trademark on "Let's Play" before you're not actually trademarking "Let's Play" anymore.
just like how king trademarked "saga" right
Idk isn't that pretty out of context though?
They did so because as soon as their games became popular, 10 billion clones of 'candy xx' or 'xx saga' started popping up.
PS4 will gain LP related features, with one that captures and cuts your gameplay into 10 minute sections and generates a clickbaity thumbnail for maximum Youtube revenue.
Youtube got rid of the 10-minute time limit ages ago.
Youtube got rid of the 10-minute time limit ages ago.
Doesn't stop the insane retention drop after 10 minutes though.
Youtube got rid of the 10-minute time limit ages ago.
You can release daily just by playing a little over an hour every week with 10 minute episodes
It's like trademarking selfie. You just can't.
I hope the judges/whoever does this does not make this go through.
That isn't the point, iirc 10 minute vids have the highest ad to time ratio, with uploaders being able to use prerolls, those ones that fade in in the bottom and the postroll ads
see: Gamegrumps
More like;
see: any promoted Youtube channel ever
The 10 minutes does give you a fucking nice length/ad ratio, but it is also a attention span thing. Compare the lets plays of the Best Friends to most other channels, their ~30min videos must have a somewhat awful attrition rate compared to something like Gamegrumps. A lot of the other factoid channels also follow the same formula, people get kind of put off by long videos.
As much as I dislike the shorter videos of most channels after revenue, I can see why it would be appealing to the content creator. Having a decent attrition rate in your viewers gets your shit promoted even harder. Breaking a video into three parts when it could be one gives you more ad space. It's a win-win for the creator.
